The thing is Ellen represents white woman and white lesbian women. She is a reference point for many Americans on the accomplishment of these 2 subgroups over the past 30 years. I mean, she is the first person to star as an openly gay character on prime-time TV.

Bush tried to amend the constitution to make it illegal for gay people to get married and started a war that killed over a million people that we're still fighting today yet Ellen is perfectly cool hanging out with him.
