Real talk, what does one get out of not believing? I mean if it was a poker hand and you stood to loose eternity in heaven...would you call? and if so what in the pot... what are you hoping to win?

It doesn't seem worth it to be atheist IMO :manny:

I'm not taking shots, just curious. :ld:

You capture a very good point. Practicing religion out of self-interest (that is, to get into "heaven") is less commendable than living a good, moral life because you want to do what's right, in my opinion.

I couldn't respect any theoretical higher power that would reject me in spite of the good I did in life, just because I didn't worship it in a way that it liked, which would be highly dependent on where I was born and how I was raised.

Atheists don't think along the lines of "what do I have to gain?" when it comes to this discussion, clearly. They think in terms of "What do I really think is the truth?"

The latter is more commendable than the former, in my opinion.

That's under the assumption that there is indeed something or someone to believe in, which for atheists, there isn't. For those who truly believe that there is no God, the risk of believing or not believing is not apart of their reality. To them they would believe if they have 100% definitive proof God exists, but since they don't (and no one does) then what is there to believe in to even risk? The risk of going to hell for eternity doesn't exist if one does not believe in hell or eternity.

Just my 2 cent :manny:

there have been so many religion threads here and on that old site that i just cant believe how anybody would be surprised to find out that not everybody believes the same things. im not even sure why someone would come to a place called "higher learning" and not expect people with ideas that run the gamut.

There aren't that many atheists on this board. Just a lot of confused agnostics and wannabe's convinced that 'lack of belief' is a logical stance.......:laff:

it's much better to defend religion at all costs while pretentiously trying to act like you're above the conversation by hiding behind words games about god...cuz classical definitions are so mainstream. hipster spiritualism at it's finest.

Even better to be skeptical of a hypothesis without offering any evidence contrary to that hypothesis while misrepresenting the opponent's position.....even though your own position makes even less sense than your opponent's.
