Yahoo , aol
All those messenger apps Yahoo messenger, msn, icq, aim etc never adapted could have easily been WhatsApp

"Chat rooms" in general is old 90s internet relic. "Apps" for organized group chats and social media put a end to all that. It's kinda of a shame too, I liked the idea of website where people can gather and actively communicate. There was once a website/app a few years ago called "Rabbit." It was a chat room platform that included video streaming so people could gather around and chat while watching stuff together. It seemed like a fantastic idea and I thought it would be the next big thing but it just couldn't get enough investors to last and it died within a year.

In laserdisc defense I dont think it was ever intended to be a true consumer medium. When I was a kid I only saw laser discs and laser disc players in schools and libraries while video cassettes were still dominant. I dont remember ever seeing laser disc advertised in tv and magazines. Seems like it was more intended for industrial use and only the most lucrative home theatre buffs at the time.

Great info, thanks :ehh:

I need to hunt down some functioning players.

PS2 launch titles was ass.

DC Had Sonic Adventure, NFL 2K and Soul Calibur at launch.

But Sony stans ruined gaming because they wanted "cinematic" gameplay with no replay value, which later bankrupted many 3rd party companies in the late 00s in the recession in the PS3 era, due to the average price tag of a game being more expensive that shooting a live-action movie.

Yup Sony started that trend that every video game has to have blockbuster CGI in order to be profitable. Remember when "Toy Story" was the golden standard of 3D graphics in the industry. I remember "like Toy Story" coming out the mouths of Sony reps many times when talking about the PS2 before it hit stores. They hyped up "the cell" chip like it was gonna really bring photorealist graphics to life. Then I finally saw Tekken Tag Tournament and was like.

:childplease::childplease::childplease:

Like Toy Story my ass. But hey, it worked for them.

Meanwhile I was playing NFL2K, NBA2K and Phatasy Star Online with players worldwide on Seganet while the Sony heads were waiting in line just to play Fantavision and Evergrace :mjlol:.

And it worked for them. The hype of PS2 couldnt be stopped. Even the magazines were complicit in pretending like the PS2 launch was actually groundbreaking and superior to the Dreamcast 2000 Christmas lineup which included fukking Shenmue for starters; then, the most expensive and technically advanced video game ever made. They were too deep in the Sony hype and couldnt turn back.

Havin fun reminiscing my old gaming days with yall.

Oh let's not forget ustream
They really dropped the ball

Oh man. I remember using this site once and I dont even remember why but I remember it being important back when hosting or watching live streaming video was something new and complicated.

I wonder if anyone remembers "Stickam" as well. Webcam streaming for an audience pre-Youtube, pre-Facebook, pre-Twitch. It was wild. I use to fukk around for hours on there in high school! I remember celebrities and early "streamers" using it as well. Site rose up, came, and went right before my eyes within years.
