UMD Movies weren't that popular, which is why they failed.
I believe Sony stop producing them way before they stopped making psp games.

I actually used to have the UMD for 'Are we there yet?'

This was planned. The iPhone was the new iPod.

Also most of these things people are mentioning didn’t come and go. DVDs?! USB?!

Betamax and laserdisc are probably the truest example. I collect laserdiscs and so many are unused.

Curved and 3D TV. 3D cinema buzz in the last 10 years.

Minidisc maybe another one.

In laserdisc defense I dont think it was ever intended to be a true consumer medium. When I was a kid I only saw laser discs and laser disc players in schools and libraries while video cassettes were still dominant. I dont remember ever seeing laser disc advertised in tv and magazines. Seems like it was more intended for industrial use and only the most lucrative home theatre buffs at the time.

I despised Sony as a rival to Sega at the time. The only Playstation games truthfully that made me really want one was Tekken, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and Castlevania. Otherwise I stuck with Sega and don't regret it, though, again, it was painful watching them fall flat. I truly believe the Saturn has aged better than Playstation. What the system did offer that was quality is the HEIGHT of 32 bit gaming. Period. There is nothing like DecAthlete, Panzer Dragoon, Dragon Force or Sega Rally with that level of video processing (some running at 60fps) and that level of CD quality audio on the Playstation or the Nintendo 64.

By the time the PS2 came out and destroyed Dreamcast, I refused to jump over. I was still playing Dreamcast games well into 2002 when everyone else had moved on. The PS2s launch was pathetic despite the stupid amounts of hype leading to it. Those initial games were horrid, did not live up to any of the hype, and looked and played terrible next to games like Resident Evil Code Veronica, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, Shen-fukking-Mue, Phantasy Star Online, Crazy Taxi and a bevy of innovative stuff Sega just threw at fans as they headed out the door in 2000/2001. It was both sad and at the same time such a memorable part of my childhood. I eventually jumped over to Xbox. I don't really play video games too much no more though. Last console I bought was an Xbox 360. I feel like the way the industry works now with exclusive games becoming almost a thing of the pass that owning these consoles (besides Nintendo) is just a waste of space, I have a decked out custom gaming PC with a wireless controller to keep me happy nowadays.

PS2 launch titles was ass.

DC Had Sonic Adventure, NFL 2K and Soul Calibur at launch.

But Sony stans ruined gaming because they wanted "cinematic" gameplay with no replay value, which later bankrupted many 3rd party companies in the late 00s in the recession in the PS3 era, due to the average price tag of a game being more expensive that shooting a live-action movie.
