Nah you're wyling. In the 90s, X men was more popular than spider man. Theres a reason why X-men (2000) was brought to the big screen 1st before spider-man (2002). When you say "handful" of X men I bet that handful is as big as a team as the current Avenger roster ; Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Iceman, Colossus, Professor X, Jean Grey, Beast..thats 10 off the rip that I know we're huge in the 90s
From my experience/memories the top dogs in marvel were
1. X men
2. Spiderman
3. Fantastic 4 & Dr Doom
4. Hulk I guess, but he was nowhere near F4. Honestly Silver Surfer mightve been more popular than hulk at this point.
The Avengers were an afterthought, you'd see a iron man/thor cameo somewhere and be like "oh yea I forgot about them". They were truly the B team
Everything was all about the X men. shyt, X men vs Street Fighter came out before Marvel vs Capcom. From TV/Videogames/comics to the first big screen adaption, X men 100% had shyt on lock
That's why so many people are excited as fukk about them finally coming home to the MCU and away from FOX. They are a big part of 90s kids childhood memories
naw. they werent. peter parker was a household name by the time the xmen started to pop. unlike the fantastic four, spider man never rely fell off. books, two live action tv shows both here and in japan(wont even talk about his influence there) a multitude of cartoons and video games and even balloons in the macys parade. shyt spider man helped to make iceman more popular than any xmen series ever did in the same way deadpool did for colossus. theres a reason that marvel only sold the movie rights when it came to spider man but gave up everything but comic publishing rights when it came to the xmen.
When Marvel was having issues in the 90's, it was the X titles that saved them. Spider-man is popular and he has remained generally consistent, but at the height of Wolverine's popularity, one could argue he was as popular if not more so than Spidey. The only reason why the mutants aren't really spoken of now is because Disney benched them cuz they didn't have the rights. I look at it like this: the other Spider-Men got a huge pop when they showed up in No Way Home...
Now imagine if Hugh Jackman as Logan had stepped through one of those portals... Dude would have gotten an ovation.
youre making my point. wolverine is bigger than the xmen brand and has been for a long time
