Police: Florida man said he’d bring gun to Walmart if toy was broken

Associated Press

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say a man threatened to return to a Walmart store with a gun if the remote control car he was buying didn’t work.

Clearwater police spokesman Rob Shaw says police arrested 33-year-old Anthony Reed on Monday evening. They say he made the threat Friday, days after 22 people were killed in a shooting rampage at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Reed told the employee he’s “serious about his money” and would come back with a gun if the car didn’t work. The report says the threat created a “well-founded fear” for employees.

Police identified Reed through the store’s surveillance system. Reed told police he was joking and doesn’t own a gun.

He’s facing a felony charge of making a false report about using a firearm in a violent manner.

Florida vacation home invaded by vomiting vultures

Florida vacation home invaded by vomiting vultures

safe_image.php

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A New York couple’s luxurious vacation house in Florida has been taken over by dozens of black vultures that are vomiting and defecating everywhere.

The Palm Beach Post reports the Casimano family can’t even visit the $702,000 home they purchased earlier this year in the Ibis Golf and Country Club.

Siobhan Casimano described the smell as “like a thousand rotting corpses.” The vultures have destroyed screen enclosures, and have overtaken the pool and barbeque. The few times the family has visited, they’ve had to park their car in the garage or the birds peck at them with their beaks.

A neighbor, Cheryl Katz, tells the Post she’s got it even worse because she lives next door to a person who is feeding the vultures and other wildlife. In May, she said vultures tore through her pool enclosure and couldn’t figure out how to get out.

“Imagine 20 vultures trapped, biting each other — and they can bite through bones,” she said. “They would bang against my windows running away from a bird that was attacking them. Blood was everywhere. It was a vile, vicious, traumatic event. And it was Memorial Day, so no company I called would come out to help me.”

Finally, three police officers arrived. They removed the screens and shooed away the vultures.

Since she has chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which leaves her vulnerable to infections, she’s had to be extra careful going outside, even having someone power wash the patio twice.

The homeowners blame Katz’ neighbor, who they claim is excessively feeding wildlife.

Katz said she has seen the neighbor give bags of dog food and even a roasted chicken to the vultures.

Neighborhood association president Gordon Holness said they’ve warned the woman but they’re limited in what they can do because the vultures, as migratory birds, are protected by federal law.

Holness said vultures were not a problem in the neighborhood before this spring. He said they’ve contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to issue a warning, but so far they’ve been ignored by the neighbor.

Katz said she spoke to someone at the U.S. Wildlife Service and learned it is hard to get a permit to kill a black vulture.

People have suggested scaring them with fireworks or balloons, but that doesn’t work for long.

Katz even tried putting out four fake owls that have moving heads and blinking lights. “The vultures chewed the owls apart,” she said. “They ripped the heads off.”

Daytona Beach man jailed, accused of threatening mass shooting

Tristan Scott Wix (Courtesy: Volusia County Sheriff's Office)

Associated Press

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida man has been arrested and accused of threatening a mass shooting in text messages.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says 25-year-old Tristan Scott Wix of Daytona Beach sent several text messages stating he wanted to “break a world record for longest confirmed kill ever.” The office says that in another message, Wix texted he wanted to reach 100 victims and had decided on a location. It was unclear who Wix was texting or how deputies obtained the information.

Authorities say Wix was arrested Friday at a supermarket in Daytona Beach Shores on a charge of making written threats to kill. The sheriff’s news release says Wix told detectives he didn’t own firearms but was fascinated with mass shootings.

BSO searching for subject who attacked man with sword over cart found in trash pile

OAKLAND PARK, FLA. (WSVN) - The Broward Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man who attacked another man with a sword over a cart that was found in a trash pile in Oakland Park.

According to BSO, the incident took place July 15. Detectives said the victim was jogging around his neighborhood in Oakland Park when he came across a man searching through a bulk trash pile in front of a home near Prospect Road and Northwest 11th Terrace.

The jogger joined in on the search and eventually came across a black heavy-duty dump cart that he took as his own.

However, deputies said, the other man became upset, feeling that he had rights over the pile since he was there first.

The two exchanged words, but the jogger then took the cart home.

Investigators said the jogger then noticed that the other man had followed him, who then attacked the jogger with a sword while trying to take the cart. The ordeal was captured on surveillance video.

Deputies said the jogger pointed out that the man was being recorded, and he then left. However, he threatened to return.

The jogger then left the cart sitting in his front yard, and it was later picked up by a woman who dragged it away while she insulted the jogger.

BSO believes the suspect and woman know each other and are now looking to identify them.

If you have any information on their identities, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a $3,000 reward.

Kinkajou attacks South Florida man, runs into apartment
Lake Worth Beach man bitten, scratched by exotic animal

view

LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. - A South Florida man was attacked by a kinkajou that ran inside his girlfriend's apartment.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission documented the July 25 wildlife attack in Lake Worth Beach.

According to an incident report, Michael Litersky noticed the kinkajou on a downstairs fence outside his girlfriend's apartment the day before and left some watermelon for the exotic animal to eat.

As Litersky opened the front door of the apartment about 5:45 a.m. the next day, the kinkajou was right outside.

"The kinkajou immediately attacked him, biting him on the ankles," the report said.

Litersky said the kinkajou ran inside the apartment, so he trapped the small animal in the bathroom.
Wildlife officers were called to remove the animal, native to Central and South America.

The FWC photographed a bite mark on Litersky's left foot and several scratches to his right calf and shin.

How the kinkajou wound up there is uncertain, as there were no permitted kinkajou owners in the area.

The kinkajou was taken to a licensed FWC facility.

Alligators caught climbing fences and swimming across roads in Florida

Courtesy: Roger Light Jr.

CNN

(CNN) — Most people know alligators get just about everywhere in Florida, but now they’ve really leveled up.

Videos from last week show one swimming in the middle of a busy road — and another climbing a fence.

One of the intrusive reptiles was filmed on Thursday swimming in a giant puddle in the middle of an intersection during a downpour in St. Petersburg. Facebook user Roger Light Jr. caught it on video.

Another gator in Jacksonville took a cue from a viral “Storm Area 51” Facebook post. Someone caught this animal climbing the fence at the naval air station in the city, and, no, we didn’t know they could climb fences either.

The gator made a much more graceful landing than many of us would have.

A Best Buy deliveryman allegedly doused a woman with a liquid chemical and beat her to death after installing her washer and dryer in Florida, cops said.

Jorge Luis Depre Lachazo, 21, arrived at the Boca Raton home with his co-worker to install the appliances on Monday and was eventually left alone with Evelyn Udell to explain how to use the devices, according to the Boca Raton Police Department.

The co-worker suddenly heard screams and ran inside to discover the 75-year-old Udell lying on the floor covered in blood.

Lachazo then hopped into the delivery van and fled, cops said.

Udell was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where she died Tuesday.

When he was apprehended, Lachazo admitted that he struck the woman and set her on fire.

The man also told police he had used cocaine and marijuana earlier in the day.

The suspect was charged with murder, arson and armed burglary.

Florida man arrested after allegedly performing botched castration surgery
The suspect, 74-year-old Gary Van Ryswyk, said he met the victim on a eunuch fetish website.

A Florida man was arrested for allegedly performing an illegal castration surgery on another man who he had met on a fetish website for eunuchs, authorities said Tuesday.

"This one is a little … let’s just say sensitive," Highlands County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. "You could even say it’s kinda nuts."

A deputy went to a home just before midnight on Aug. 18, checking on an aborted 911 call in Sebring, about 90 miles southeast of Tampa, officials said.

The door was answered by Gary Van Ryswyk, 74, and he told the deputy he had just performed a castration, as deputies "found the man on the bed with a towel over his groin, which was bleeding heavily," according to a Highland County Sheriff'd Department statement.

Highlands County Sheriff's Office
"Nearby, there was a pink container which held two body parts that had recently been much closer to the victim," the sheriff statement continued. "The victim was taken to the hospital and was later flown to a regional medical center."

The victim is in stable condition, according to the sheriff's office.

Van Ryswyk made an operating room in his own house, complete with medical equipment, painkillers and a camera to record the procedure, officials said. Van Ryswyk told investigators he had met the victim on a dark web castration fetish site called eunuch.com, authorities said.

The suspect told the victim that he's performed castration on animals and had even removed one of his own testicles in 2012, according to the sheriff.

"He also said he had done a similar procedure on a man in a local motel a few years ago that turned out pretty much like this one, but couldn’t remember the other man’s name," the sheriff said. "The man went to the hospital, but law enforcement was not notified."

Van Ryswyk was booked Monday on suspicion of felony practicing medicine without a license resulting in bodily injury, a second-degree felony. His bond was set at $250,000.

The sheriff's office added: "Van Ryswyk had dropped the ball on this one." :mjlol:

THE EVERGLADES, Fla. (WSVN) — Another enormous reptile roundup in South Florida ended with the removal of a large reptile believed to be a threat to native wildlife.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission posted these photos on Facebook.

A member of the Python Action Team removed a Burmese python from Big Cypress Natural Preserve in the Everglades that was 17 feet, 9 inches.

This was the second largest reptile caught by the team.

The snakes are an invasive species and threaten native wildlife.

Florida man looses 25% of his skin in fight against flesh-eating bacteria
Courtesy: Fox News/GoFundMe
CNN

(CNN) — A Florida man has undergone three surgeries to strip 25% of his skin off his body as he battles an infection of flesh-eating bacteria.

David Ireland, who was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria, is in critical condition at a Florida hospital, according to a GoFundMe set up by his brother.

Necrotizing fasciitis refers to death of the tissue under the skin that surrounds muscles, nerves, fat, and blood vessels. More than one type of bacteria can eat the flesh; public health experts believe that group A Strep bacteria are the most common cause of these infections.

About 11,000 to 13,000 cases of invasive group A strep disease occur each year in the United States and up to 1,600 people die of some form of this invasive disease, though not all cases appear as necrotizing fasciitis, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hopeful signs
It is unclear how Ireland contracted the infection. Usually, these bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin, including cuts and scrapes, burns, insect bites, puncture wounds and even surgical wounds. Some people can get necrotizing fasciitis after an injury that does not break the skin (blunt trauma).

Though Ireland’s kidneys have failed, “his blood pressure and acid numbers from his liver are starting to level off, showing a hopeful sign of recovery,” wrote his brother, Daniel Ireland, on Sunday. The fundraiser is intended to cover David Ireland’s hospital bills and the living expenses of his wife, Jody Ireland, and their two young daughters.

On Sunday, Ireland was still in a “life-threatening situation,” according to his wife who also posted to GoFundMe.

Doctors will also be examining Ireland for additional infection and if need be, taking off more skin, she said.

Symptoms, treatment & prevention
Early symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis include a red or swollen area of skin that spreads quickly, severe pain and fever. Later symptoms include ulcers, blisters, or black spots on the skin, changes in skin color, pus, dizziness, fatigue and diarrhea or nausea.

Antibiotics and surgery are typically the first lines of defense in cases of necrotizing fasciitis, according to the CDC. Because the disease can spread so rapidly, it is not unusual for patients to require multiple surgeries. Necrotizing fasciitis can lead to sepsis, shock, and organ failure and even with treatment, up to one in three people sickened by it die from the infection, according to the CDC.

While anyone can get necrotizing fasciitis, it is rare, and most patients have other health problems — such as diabetes, kidney disease or cancer — that lower their body’s ability to fight infections.

Good wound care is the best way to prevent any bacterial skin infection, according to the CDC. It is important to clean even minor cuts and injuries that break the skin with soap and water. Always clean and cover draining or open wounds with dry bandages until they heal. And see a doctor for puncture and other deep or serious wounds.

The Florida Department of Health also suggests that people “who are immunocompromised, e.g. chronic liver disease, kidney disease, or weakened immune system, should wear proper foot protection to prevent cuts and injury caused by rocks and shells on the beach.”

Florida man threatens another man after failing to flush toilet

HUDSON, Fla. - Sure, we all expect others to respect humankind with proper bathroom etiquette, but one Florida man (naturally) took things a bit too far.

Keith Mounts, 46, was arrested on an assault charge after he allegedly took out a machete and pointed it another man who had not flushed after using the toilet.

WTVT reports Mounts told the unnamed victim that he will "chop" him with the machete during the incident in Hudson.

Pasco County deputies said Mounts claimed self-defense, but did not explain what he was defending himself against.

Apropos of the situation, Mounts' written statement included "s___ happens."
