everybody saying beyonce but OP clearly said 80's and 90's :rudy:

this is actually a great question...i would imagine a number of reasons lead to this

I'm always citing the show UNSUNG in these discussions, but that's the best show to answer this question

- Vesta was a diva and people didn't wanna work with her
- Angela Winbush got cancer and it slowed her down
- Stacey Lattisaw got tired of the politics of the music business and retired
- CeCe penniston and a few others just didn't mesh with the direction black music was going

I do believe Amerie's career was sabotaged by Beyonce's handlers :sas2:

One thing i have notice is that the difference of support that past black women singers had as compared to now when it comes to the black community. What cause the shift?

Honestly, rap.

R&B tried too hard to compete with rap for radio and tv space. It was kind of a back and forth competition. R and b singers started getting raunchier and less lovey dovey and rappets started having singers sing the hook. Eventually singers started singing over rap beats.

That's just my lazy recap of it

Even with rap being an r&b artist like usher and Alicia keys were outselling rappers not name enimem.

Yet an artist like bruno mars can get hits with clasic r&b sound and don't get me started on adele. Even without going through r&b black female singers were still represented in pop. I think it's bigger then beyonce.
Sound is changing you got to adapt
