If you want something dark with a great story I suggest you watch Monster
. Probably the best story telling you'll find in anime. There are no jokes, cutesy characters, or anything to smile about. It's a mystery/psychological thriller that's very grim and eerie. Start with that Death Note, and FMA Brotherhood. Monster is the darkest of the bunch.
