With Monogatari finishing up. Created a tier list for Summer 2024. Will try to at least write a one-liner for each

YVkTevM.png

  • Best Of Season
    • Monogatari Off and Monster Season (Supernatural) - As probably the best Ln adaptation into anime, Monogatari came back as strong as ever. Giving Nadeko Sengoku a great character arc and added a lot of depth to Shinobu and her origins.
    • Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master (Drama/Fantasy) - Most likely the biggest surprise of the year. A bit of a slow start, but when it got going, it was top-notch. Rock solid visuals, immaculate direction where the twists were beautifully executed and some real top botch world building.
    • Look Back (Drama/Oktau Culture) - Series written by the CSM creator Tatsuki Fujimoto. This series shows how well Fujimoto can write when he doesn't go too weird with his stories. A must-watch and especially if you read manga.
    • NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Part 2 (Action/Sci-fi/Fantasy) - Based on the game created by Yoko Taro. This is more like a pseudo sequel to the game than a pure adaptation. If you at least play NieR Automata, you should love with what the anime does. It uses the anime medium to its strengths to elevate scenes from the game. Most notably, it adds content from the YoRHa: Pearl Harbor Descent Record manga and with it immensely elevates A-2's character. Must-watch for those that played Automata.
  • Great
    • Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf (Adventure/Romance/Supernatural) - Remake of the beloved anime that aired back in 2008. The series holds a mature level of writing that you don't see in much anime. Regarding both the adventure and romance aspects of the series. A standout adaptation and most likely will get a full-scale adaptation.
    • Oshi no Ko S2 (Drama/ShowBiz) - The anime did an outstanding job adapting the Tokyo Blade Arc, which is easily the best arc in the series. Now it will begin adapting the 2nd half of the manga in S3, which has its share of criticism.
    • The Elusive Samurai (Adventure/Comedy/Historical) - A series written by Assassination Classroom author Yuusei Matsui. Cloverworks gave it one of the best adaptations pf the series. S1 was mostly setting up the foundation of the series, which did an impressive job as a manga reader. If you liked S1 you will love what is to come from S2 onward.
    • Atri: My Dear Moments (Drama/Romance/Sci-fi) - VN's have issue in two ways. First, they are incredibly tough to adapt into an anime. The majority of VN's are poorly written because of the audience it tries to appease. Though Atri's story holds up well in more so telling how a super energetic humanoid has on a boy who lost his way.
    • Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary (Mystery/Slice of Life) - Written by the creator of Hyouka, and it shares similarities to it. Most notably how at the beginning you have these low-stake mysteries that you might see in one's high school life. But how these mysteries tie in to the leads' desire to become ordinary has one surprisingly more invested than you would expect. The direction is outstanding, up there with Monogatari and Yatagarasu in that regard.
    • Sengoku Youko S2 (Action/Adventure/Fantasy/Historical) - One of the most well-written series of the season. Similar to Monogatari every character has a purpose to them. One of the best things of part is the parallel that is drawn from part 1 for both the old and new cast members.
    • No Longer Allowed in Another World (Isekai/Parody) - Despite the first impression it gives, this is one of the best isekais of the year. It starts out as a funny parody, but the plot moves forward in a unique and interesting way with some surprisingly good writing makes it one of the better sleepers of this year.
  • Solid
    • The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies (RomCom/Mahou Shoujo) - Those looking for a wholesome RomCom with solid animation this one is a good amount. A plus is it being 12-min episodes.
    • Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! (RomCom) - A RomCom that focuses on the losing heroines. An interesting premise and the characters make for a very fun watch. Those that watch a good amount of RomCom's should love this.
    • Senpai is an Otokonoko (Drama/Romance/Crossdressing) - A show that focuses on gender identity is def one of the more unique ones. Also regarding romance for one who crossdresses. One of those shows you will either love or not care for most likely. Drama is on the higher side, but doesn't go too far into melodrama territory.
    • Mayonaka Punch (Supernatural/Comedy) - A series that focuses on content creation. It has a lot of heart which has a good amount of endearing moments to add along.
    • Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (Action/Fantasy/Mythology) - A story about the goddess that is forced to cultivate rice, but at the same time learning about what happened to her parents. A very endearing show, especially if you liked the game.
    • Wistoria: Wand and Sword (Action/Fantasy) - Probably the top action show of the season. Despite the cliché writing at the start it starts to come into its own in the dungeon arc and S2 will adapt moments where the series really starts to find itself.
    • 2.5 Dimensional Seduction (Comedy/Ecchi/Otaku Culture) - Drawing similarities to My Dress Up Darling since the theme of Cosplaying is used. This one, rather than being a RomCom series with a cosplay theme, is a cosplay series that dives into otaku culture and is self-aware of it. The best way to describe it is endearing in the most cringiest way possible.
    • Mission: Yozakura Family (Action/Comedy) - One of the more underrated titles in WSJ. It builds its foundation surrounding the Yozakura Family and how Taiyo influences them and vice versa. It did a decent job adapting the first major arc, although given its silver link it could have been better.
    • Tensura S3 (Action/Fantasy/Isekai) - One of the biggest isekais out and this one was a mixed big. The first half was plagued by bad pacing with too many meeting type episodes. The 2nd half of the season was a lot better focusing on the civilization aspect of the series which was more shown in S1. Which IMO was a big improvement compared to the first half.
  • Mid
    • Quality Assurance in Another World (Adventure/Fantasy/Video Game) - A series based on the premise of debugging. It wins points for being unique, and the manga is pretty solid. Fun anime, but the ending point was such a punch in the balls given that there is no S2 announcement.
    • My Deer Friend Nokotan (Comedy) - The best description of this is shytpost the anime. I had a fun time with this, and it had great direction given that Wit's best team handled the anime. One that is difficult to recommend since if the jokes don't land, there isn't much else to it.
    • Suicide Squad Isekai (Action/Isekai/Superpower) - The idea of putting the Suicide Squad in an isekai theme is an interesting concept. The issue of this series is that when the Suicide Squad wasn't on-screen the series' quality took a massive dump. Still a fun action regardless of this.
    • Roshidere (RomCom) - Roshidere is a very typical RomCom. More so the issue lies in the adaptation is that skipped moments that are important to the leads' dynamic that leads to the story feeling much more boring and uninteresting as it was in the Light Novel.
    • My Hero Academia S7 (Action/Superpower) - One of the biggest series in manga. One thing to note that bones really stepped in the direction aspect of the series and the animation is as good as it has been. Unfortunately, the issues in the manga still plague the series.
    • Pseudo Harem (RomCom) - A series that on the surface is very wholesome, but how this was adapted was not good. Especially when comparing it to The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant. Where the engagement had its issues. It is one series that would be immensely improved if it adapted 12-min episodes rather than the typical 25.
    • Bye Bye, Earth (Action/Fantasy/Anthropomorphic) - The anime this season that was the most lost potential. It had a very interesting world and a very likable protagonist. Though how events happened made it feel both rushed and too slow at the same time.
    • The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses S2 (RomCom/Harem/Ecchi) - A derivative of the The Quintessential Quintuplets, and it is quite the good Harem RomCom. But the adaptation was poorly especially when you compare the visuals of the anime to the manga.
    • Shy S2 (Action/Drama/Superpower) - Coming off S1, which ended on an interesting note. The writing essentially entered nonsense shounen territory. Animation drop made it feel even worse.
  • Dropped
    • A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring (Adventure/Isekai/Childcare) - One of the worst isekais I have seen and the kids feel like automated robots.
    • Narenare -Cheer for You!- (Drama/Slice of Life/CGDCT) - A very nonsensical Moe anime.
    • VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral after Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream (Comedy/Otaku Culture) - At first the type of comedy was very extreme and vulgar. It started off well, but it kept trying to outdo itself, and thus it went from funny to weird to just plain creepy.
    • Tasuuketsu (Action/Drama/Suspense/Death Game) - No just no.
  • PTW
    • Days with My Stepsister (Romance/Slice of Life)
    • The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible (Action/Adventure/Fantasy)
    • Dungeon People (Fantasy/Slice of Life)
    • Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest (Action/Adventure/Fantasy)

My Hero is a far far cry from the glory days in early seasons. I'm really disappointed in Bones prioritizing the movies over the series, especially when the franchise still had a lot of momentum

Do those shyts even make money for the Studio like that? Not to mention the US exclusivity deal with Starz fukking killed visibility

Well, it's more so Shieshua & Toho deciding on that since they are on the production committee. Bones is just the studio animating it.

With that being said, Movies make a killing in terms of revenue. Much, much more than it being a seasonal. The only weird thing is the high budget goes to the movies which are non canon as far as I know. Demon Slayer with Mugen Train and the pre-screening for S3+S4 have been able to get that money and even double dip. Then you have the final arc being a movie trilogy, they are about to get crazy numbers with that.

MHA has never reached the popularity it had back in S3. They lost all the momentum thanks to S4+S5. Demon Slayer, JJK & SxF are more so in the driver seat for popularity for a jump series at the moment.

Demon Slayer movies are the exception not the norm :hubie: . I never heard hype around the MHA movies like that (the 1st is Canon) :hubie:

They lost momentum bc they stopped focusing on the series. MHA started off with HYPE bc the fight scene animations were going crazy, the art was generally great too.

They fukked all that up for a mid movie (haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd)
