Recently finished S1 of Hibike! Euphonium S1. This is a coming of age Performing Arts series in which focuses on a group of students who are part of the band where they perform as part of the Musical Ensemble. I would give it an 9/10 but would only recommend if Performing Arts type of series are your thing. It's a very slow burn even for the type of series it is, but it offers a conclusion that showcases this is the start of their journey.
The strongest point in the series is the dynamic between Kumiko Oumae and Reina Kousaka. The series starts with them both in the same band in middle school and Kumiko being not really invested at the time has no emotional connection to their band falling short. Meanwhile, her words to Reina at the time they did will struck accord. Obviously being more emotionally invested in the results then here.
Over the course of the season you see Kumiko grow emotionally invested in both her and her band's performance. Where we also see her embrace the Euphonium which she decided to play again reluctantly. Where S1 conclusion brings herself to truly empathize how Reina was back then. Beyond that the major focus stems across Reina for trying to be open up to others, Hazuki trying something out and learning the pains that goes along with it and Midori as the big support character in the group. Various side characters get a spotlight on them such as Tsukamoto, Natsuki and Karoi.
As this is done by Kyoto Animations visually it is top-notch and beautifully animated. Now music plays a big theme in this show. Overall the music is very well done as well. With only 2 big performances it doesn't get as much time to shine, but is executed well in these 2 moments in S1. The biggest thing for the series is that it is a very slow burn as you don't get payoff and investment until episode 10 or so.
