Aku no Hana may be the least accessible anime ever made. The visual design is intentionally unattractive to annoy viewers who are accustomed to conventional animation styles and, if they haven't dropped it yet, to stress the theme of finding beauty within the ugly. The narrative is inspired by Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal which for non french speakers requires a translation to even be read nevermind understood.

if the viewer finds these decisions to be pretentious then the show is unwatchable. There's no base level of attraction to pull you in unlike other esoteric anime with convoluted narratives - you can sympathize with Lain as a character, Texhnolyze is violent, Ergo Proxy has impressive production values even if the narrative made little sense. Here you either exercise extreme patience to understand or you don't, and for most it's really not worth trying to understand it.

It does hold value for those who are interested in Baudelaire, decadence/some ideas of aestheticism and will look past the surface to see the broader picture. I think it's a great anime if those requirements are met. but I wouldn't fault anyone for thinking it's trash because it's literally designed to upset viewers who don't fall into a very specific niche.

Aku no hana had me reading The flower of evil by Charles Baudelaire. talk about darkness.

I feel like this may be over stated. Anime that look like the picture above will definitely catch the eye of a certain type of anime fan but it's bushes on sight status to the mainstream no matter the story. It could be made in abyss/madoka style but the everyday show watcher that isnt particularly an anime fanatic wont give af and skip it. Think of anime that really blew up recently

They cant look like that. Even anime bacc in the day, people always bring up bebop dbz trigun deathnote etc. The only way a show can catch any mainstream eye without a mature visual style is if it gets memed heavy like that dragon maid show (which still wasnt that big) or the fanbase ODs on it (rezero)

Black Clovers terrible i cant believe im 70+ episodes in they haven't accomplished anything

Like rushed shows that are given 12 episodes and just need one more to feel complete can do more compared to this shytty show .

Black clover 5/10
Academia is a 7/10

Boruto would be pulling all these battle shounen's cards if it weren't for the anime's REFUSAL to adopt the damn manga
Over 100 episodes in, 14 are from the boruto manga and 6 from naruto gaiden manga

thats 20 episodes total but the anime is at episode 105
1 canon episode every 10 year average

Asta is almost a meme a chunk of the time but he's got far more grit, humor, depth, & overall cool than Deku. :ReverendKat:
