Let’s be clear. Nintendo dominated with exclusive 3rd party support. You were not playing Mega Man, Contra, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, etc anywhere else. Things loosened up a bit with the SNES/Genesis era, but for the most part Nintendo had a lock.

It's why PS1 won

It's why the PS4 won
Sony Stan's did their best to try and change the narrative towards the end of the PS4 generation with 1st party "console exclusives" only to walk that back with the PS5 and it having to lean on "3rd party exclusives" and sharing their "console exclusives" on PC now.

Ironically, Sega helped them in the development of the original XBox once they gave up on Dreamcast (hence why the controllers were almost identical) and now 20 years later Microsoft is suffering the same fate
