THERE’S A RIDICULOUSLY EASY WAY TO BYPASS LOUISIANA’S NEW PORN LAW

THAT... THAT WAS EASY.

That Doesn't Work

The state of Louisiana just enacted a new porn access law requiring internet users to upload a digital version of a government-issued ID to some fairly sketchy third-party services to access popular adult websites like Pornhub.

The law, according to its backers, seeks to protect children from premature porn exposure. But beyond the law's overt data risks — not to mention the slippery slope it poses to surveillance and even moral policing — there's another pretty serious problem with the state's attempted digital barricade: it straight up just doesn't work.

"All you gotta do is turn the WiFi off," a Louisiana-based source told Futurism, explaining that he discovered the trick while attempting to access Pornhub in an area with spotty internet service. "And when the video starts you can turn the WiFi back on so it plays clearer."

In other words, switching to 5G seems to bypass the third-party barrier — no VPN required. It does require a smartphone, but research shows that's where the vast majority of porn gets watched these days anyway.

"Now if you want to watch porn on your computer like a grandpaw," the source warned, "then you're fukked."

Extremely Dumb

A quick scroll through Louisiana Reddit appeared to confirm the workaround.

"Dumb," wrote one Reddit commenter. "Turn your wifi off and use 5G."

"Turning on my phone's mobile data instead of wifi was all it took to bypass it," provided yet another.

And if that's not enough, one user even discovered that even when using WiFi, the law — which supposedly applies to all websites comprised of at least "33.3 percent" or more pornographic content — didn't even block all porn-specific platforms, some of which are known to have shockingly horrendous content moderation practices.

"I tested this out yesterday w/ Pornhub, Xvideos and XHamster," added another user. "Pornhub was the only one that required this, and that was when I was connected to my WiFi at home. If I connected to it using my data, I did not get the prompt."

In other words, the Louisiana law is ill-informed at best — and broken in practice.

Age Verification Bill Tracker

In 2022, Louisiana passed a law requiring the use of age verification on websites that contain a “substantial portion” (33.33%) of adult content. Websites must utilize approved age verification systems, such as a valid driver’s license or state ID, or any “commercially reasonable method that relies on public or private transactional data” to confirm that a user is at least 18 years old. Louisiana’s law has sparked a flurry of copycat legislation to be introduced in state houses around the country.

PROSECUTE FOR AGE VERIFICATION FAILURE- A Louisiana legislative committee advanced a bill Wednesday that would let the state attorney general go after companies of pornographic websites that do not comply with a state law that requires age verification of its users. A report by the Louisiana Illuminator reveals the House Committee on Commerce voted 15-1 to advance House Bill 77, sponsored by Rep. Laurie Schlegel, Republican from Metairie.

“What HB77 does it also gives the office of the Attorney General the ability to sue civil penalities against commercial entities who are currently not following the Louisiana age verification law that we passed to protect children from material harmful to minors,” Schlegel said. “Currently what we have is come companies are complying and some are not.”

Louisiana Rep. Laurie Schlegel, R-Metairie is the sponsor to HB-77 that would allow the attorney general to prosecute pornographic websites that fail to verify ages of users.

Schlegel, a sex addiction therapist, said she her bill is to ensure enforcement of the existing law to better protect minors, who she views a
s susceptible to harm from pornography.

Representative Candance Newell, Democrat-New Orleans, was the sole vote in opposition. She said the bill’s language is overly broad and might give the attorney general room for personal interpretation to include books on sex education and others. Schlegel pushed back on the idea that the language is overly broad, pointing to portions of her bill that incorporate the Miller Test, the primary tool used to gauge how obscene materials are defined.

But Free Speech advocates including Louisiana’s branch of the American Civil Liberties Union are concerned that Schlegel’s bill could impact constitutionally protected speech. Also of concern is how R-rated cable TV programs and streaming services along with material of scientific value could be affected should the bill become law. Schlegel said she was open to amending her bill on the House Floor to address those concerns.

Your post is dumb as shyt.

I'm all for blocking porn from minors. Y'all huffing and puffing mighty hard on something that actually makes sense.
The idea isn't stupid but the process might be.

-VPN doesn't mean you get around the required ID. And they can block access from other countries.

-Downloading porn may work, but then that's why you put in parental codes.

-What legal adult is sharing passwords with minors?:ufdup:

This is Louisiana govt we're talking though, not Texas, California or Virginia

and there's VPN servers in other states..
