Drake was signed before so far gone and the bidding war was fake. Anybody that actually believes otherwise is an idiot or a Stan. His singles were heavily pushed on to radio, that does NOT happen without a label.

Kendrick Lamar has been signed for a while too.

In 2008, Lil Wayne was given some of Drake's music from Rap-A-Lot founder, J. Prince's son, Jas Princehe immediately called Drake to invite him to fly to Houston and tour with him.

Drake and Wayne recorded a couple of songs during this time, including "Ransom", the original version of "I Want This Forever", and the remix to Drake's song, "Brand New". Though now part of Lil Wayne's crew, Young Money, Drake was not signed.

On February 13, 2009, Drake released his third official mixtape, So Far Gone, for free download on his blog site which included Drake's mentor Lil Wayne, Bun B, Omarion, Lloyd and his friend, Trey Songz. It received over 2,000 downloads in the first 2 hours of release. It was extremely successful in the underground and eventually made its way to radio

The bidding war was *REAL* & it started *AFTER* "So Far Gone" the mixtape came out. When "Best I Ever Had" went #1 with no Major Label backing everybody from Interscope to Capitol was offering Young Money multiple million dollar deals & as bad as Drake wanted to sign to Jimmy Iovine, not everybody knows that in YM's contract with Universal Records they get first dibs on any artist signed to YM first which is why both Nicki & Drake are signed to Universal Motown instead of one of the bigger labels that deal with Hip Hop like Atlantic or Interscope...

The bidding war was real fam... there's bidding wars over artists of much less caliber let alone a free agent with a #1 record on Billboard. I remember being in LA at the time Best I Ever Had was just Top 40 & nikkaz was talking dumb numbers to get Drake & everybody knew Drake was pissed that Universal gets first dibs on YM artists because he *REALLY* doesn't like Silvia Rhone...

the fact that drake was on "every girl" which which had a video filmed in february 09 should make it kinda obvious dude was signed at the time, especially since he says "Young Money, man this shyt so timeless" on the song. you dont get to spit a verse on a video single without signing some kind of paperwork, its that simple. plus, the mixtape came out the same day the video was filmed. if he wasn't on that song/video i would say maybe he wasn't actually signed but he was on that song though.

he aint the first plant, its just like Biggie being signed to Badboy and being on the Mary J Blige songs before he released "Party and Bullshyt", or DMX being signed to Ruff Ryders and being on everyones album before "Get At Me Dog" came out. back in the days there was alot of industry plants.

granted in this day and age with media technology being what it is, it is easier for unsigned artists to get noticed and there was a time when Drake was an unsigned artist too, but this was before So Far Gone. The bidding war was definitely a publicity stunt.

Sylvia Rhone was going to sue Drake if he signed with anyone other than Universal.

Young Money is owned by Universal, the bidding war was a farce

It was either Drake pull a bytch move on Wayne or sign with Universal

Naw, that means nothing...

But since Universal has a clause in their contract with YM that they get first dibs then yeah she would've sued the shyt out of them but just because they own Young Money means nothing.

For instance they have no faith in Jae Mills... that nikka could go sign with Def Jam & Universal Motown wouldn't give a fukk...

Funny part is if he would've waited he could've got what he wanted since Sylvia left Universal & is being sought out by Columbia, Epic & Island...

"Best I Ever Had" was a hit because....it was a SMASH.

First time I heard that on the night SFG dropped, I thought to myself, "he gotta release this as a single or somethin," sh1t was too hot not to get plays.

True. I remember when me and my boy were bumpin the tape same day it dropped. A good amount of people were lookin for it, but not really lookin for it like that. But we were bumpin it, and my boy was like, "Ay...this Best I Ever Had song is about to blow the fukk up."

I looked at him like :mjpls:

Couple weeks later nikka is like :umad:

Can't even hate tho. nikkas love to hate on Aubrey, but that track and that tape were flames.

Yes, he signed to Young Money sometime in 2008 but wasn't on a Major...

Young Money is an Imprint like GOOD Music or DTP... just because you're signed to them doesn't mean you're signed to a major.

For example... if GOOD Music signed you tomorrow they would still have to convince a Major to put you on their roster...

It's like how Big Sean has been with GOOD since 2007 but didn't get signed to a Major until 2010 (Def Jam)...

When you're on an Imprint you have all of their resources, relationships & some of their money at your disposal but Imprints don't have the same heavy relationships & resources a Major has which is why you have to get shopped to one too...

You ever notice how GLC & Farnsworth Bentley were signed to GOOD Music but they never came out? Kanye couldn't find a Major that was interested in backing their project & Kanye isn't about to spend his own bread... no artist does... they have their own project to worry about...

So, how long have you been on drakes payroll?
