Drake Lil Wayne-Ransom 2008* - YouTube - 2008

So Far Gone - February 2009

Lil Wayne had songs with Drake before So Far Gone. If you look at Tha Carter III documentary Drake has like a 2 second cameo in it

Yup...Drake was down with YM by like early-mid '08...just hadn't signed papers yet, same with Nicki (part of the crew since like '07 but didn't sign paperwork till later)...people kill me with the "he came out of nowhere" stuff...he had popular songs with wayne during like the peak of waynemania when his random mixtape tracks was getting more love than cats singles...the hype and anticipation for SFG had started to build months before it dropped

"Best I Ever Had" was a hit because....it was a SMASH.

First time I heard that on the night SFG dropped, I thought to myself, "he gotta release this as a single or somethin," sh1t was too hot not to get plays.

That's the thing. A lot of people say, who will have to singles on the radio with major backing. BUT, those 2 singles were undeniable smashes. They both sounded completely different than what was out, and they were both fukking good.

I don't know if he had a deal or not but I can't say having singles on the radio, etc... That nikka music was hot. It wasn't to my liking but even in Cleveland the streets were talking like, "You heard this Drake dude?"... I'm not sure how much he used the internet to his gain but he damn sure had his mixtapes out there flying around. Not to mention he had a full out bidding war on who he was going to sign to

If you go on archived SOHH threads, you'll see people were talkin about Drake long before SFG.

I was hype as hell for SFG when it was dropping in November or whatever, but it kept gettin pushed back -- and IMO, that was one of the few times pushing a date back WORKED. In all that time, he added dope features and probably hooked up a few nice beats that wouldn't have made the original tape.

And LOL @ anybody who thinks labels were puttin big money into So Far Gone or something. Let's take a look at it...

production
- Boi-1da (had been working with Drake for a while)
- 40 (had been working with Drake....since he was originally coming up, I believe)

features
- Lil Wayne (we already knew they were working together prior to this..Weezy even put him on Dedication 3)
- Trey Songz (again, a connect Drake had from the start)
- Lloyd (really? people think Lloyd was a big feature? This song advance Lloyd's career moreso than Drake's )
- Bun B (has always been a fan of Drake)
- Omarion (worst song on the tape. it sounds like Omarion begged Drake to put him on there to keep Omarion's name fresh in people's minds)

It's not like dude had Jay-Z, Nas and Eminem on there lol..it was a very natural mixtape, especially for somebody who was already in show business and such.

Look at nobody rappers making tapes these days with big features. Sh1t is nothing new, you know how many garbage rappers have gotten a feature from Lil Wayne, Jeezy, 2 Chainz, etc?

He wasn't signed, but he was at a level to make connections. As already said, he had been on that show for years already, so clearly he wasn't just some random local rapper from Canada makin' a mixtape. Definitely wasn't all just grassroots, but I don't think it was some industry inside plot to blow him up either. He had access, had money already, and so it helped him do the mixtapes and become a commodity to get signed.

If I had to compare it, it's kinda like how Donald Glover is already an actor, so he's already in the entertainment industry, probably has connections, can prob. get stars on his mixtape with no problem. Doesn't necessarily mean "Childish Gambino" is some rapper who got signed outta nowhere and got planted in the industry.
