expecting retail to be a career when it requires zero skills isn't realistic. King diesel demonstrated what it takes to move up in such an environment. It's not impossible, it just takes effort.

TBF, it used to be feasible for individuals to make an honest income off of retail.

As I mentioned earlier:
Modern contracts for new hires, take longer to receive their benefits, get lower pay and slow raises.

Absolutely. I was super motivated and actually started as a temp worker in Christmas of 08 making 8.40 an hour and within 3 years I was making over 40,000 a year after getting 3 promotions.

I'm not going to front, when I worked in retail, a rather large portion of the population seemed quite content in their position, yet always bytched about management, their hours, customers, lack of promotion, pay etc.

I figured after I was nearly begged to death, by a former supervisor to become an assistant management job at 19, this sh*t can't be too hard.

I'm not saying everyone who works in retail, is "special"(lack of a better term) but a lot of them have some "serious" issues.

I mean honestly how hard is it:
1.Just show up on time( I never did, always a couple minutes late)
2.be nice to the customers(hated this, f*ck em, yet I excelled in this area)
3.do your work(don't get caught on the phone or stealing)

Real simple sh*t.

To be fair, a lot of people who retail are or have been duped into signing up to for-profit colleges like the Art Institute, University of Phoenix etc then got stuck with massive loans and have kids at an early age.

I stuck out like I sore thumb, because all my income was disposable, and I went to school. They'd get mad when they'd hear how I spent my money or never wanted to work 9+ hour shifts, everyday of the week...

Props to you bro, hope you don't get burnt out....

This is why I wrap it up...

:manny: just saying....

Life is what you make it....

A lot of it was just unmotivated people. I'll never understand how people can be content with jobs paying that little and only working a certain amount of hours. In a place like retail, if you work hard, are reliable and can make an impact at your work, the hours and the money will come. I had little relevant experience in retail previously and two jobs before in supervisory roles but the reason I moved up was because I took my job serious and outworked just about anyone. I was able to do well in the backrooms and manage 10-15 people through the unloading and outperform any backroom supervisor past present or future because I treated them with respect, went out of my way for them and would never hesitate to get involved hands on when necessary if the pace wasn't there.

But my point is, it was easy to move up because a motivated, reliable people, that cared and were passionate about their work stuck out like a sore thumb. You either had people who were lazy and unmotivated or people that have been with the company for a long time collecting those yearly raises and making 15-20 bucks an hour to do nothing in unimportant roles like door greeters, maintenance, etc.

And Walmart really isn't that bad. A lot of the stores in my area are in pretty bad shape because people are so unmotivated there and there's such a lack of good talent. They are big on their workers getting their breaks, which is more than I can say about the company I work for currently.

I'll never understand how people can be okay with 20 hour jobs making 10.00 or less. I don't understand how they can survive. No matter how well I'm doing or not doing, I'm always gonna want more. I'm making 45 a year now in a non salary hourly position and trying to get my own store and make way more within 2 years.

I hate the Blame game, sue to win society here in America. Maybe because I watched my pops claw his way from the bottom and make it on his own. No handouts, no bytching and complaining about wages. He washed dishes and saved his money until he could start his own business.

It's why the Mexicans and other immigrants come to this country with nothing and scrub floors and do a lot of shyt we wouldn't even consider doing for next to nothing, below minumum wage and under the table. They are different from us because they could give a fucck about Jordans or looking fresh or stunting. They'll live 3 families to a 2 bedroom spot and each save $ and stack to get one person out, then another person out etc. Seen it wit my own eyes.

These folks complain and blame these corporations who do nothing but act like CORPORATIONS.................It's easy, go to school, excel, bust your hump keep your mouth shut and work. What do they want Walmart to do????????????????????

Because I tell you what, if they walk off the job tomorrow and make threats, there are folks out there who would jump at the opportunity to work for that wage.

I saw dude wit the dreads on TV this am and he was saying how bad it was and Walmart spies on him and all this other stuff. The interviewer asked him why he worked there and he had the dummy face. All my sympathy went out the window.

It's a bunch of folks who want a days off on the busiest shopping days and it spun out of their control.

I'm going to be a business owner soon and all I gotta say is if you have any complaints about anything, you can walk, freely. I'm doing what I have to do to make a profit and feed my family. You do what u need to do to feed yours.

bu bu but its too haard to actually go out there and make a way for yourself! Its far easier to bytch and moan at corporations! A true utopia would be a situation where the benevolent government were to seize all corporate proits and redistribute the monies to all the great working folks in America. Only when GOVERNMENT steps in and redistributes the wealth will everything be solved.

Good luck to King Diesel and everybody like him. But as someone said not everyone can do that. There just aren't enough upper-tier jobs for Walmart's lower-tier employees to all just work harder and get promoted, even if they all had a ridiculous work ethic - which most people don't, and it's not realistic to expect of everyone.

Well from this "liberal" I think a reasonable response is for Walmart's employees to be allowed to collectively bargain to improve their position. Government doesn't have to be involved in "redistributing the wealth" at all - unless you count the taxpayer subsidy to Walmart's wage bill in the form of benefits to underpaid employees.

Lol at people siding with the corprations :heh:

I hope some of you guys don't lose your jobs and end up working at Walmart.

Walmart is the biggest example of corporate welfare in the US and you have these faux conservatives co-signing them. Walmart is one of the worst things to happen to America in the past 30 years and most don't realize it. You got cities paying Walmart to build though tax abatements that smaller business have no access to. But hey as long as I can get Oreo cookies for 1.99 and my 52 inch TV for 299, what do I care?

One or two guys succeeding by working retail doesn't mean everyone can make it that way. People who work shytty jobs are doing so because they have no other options. I thought this was common-knowledge.

What is wrong with some of you?

I knew you worked at wally world when you said you got paid on thursday :russ:

fukk WALMART

I've been working at one of their distribution centers for 5 years (After 2 years I went back to college and I'm ONE semester away from this accounting degree). They treat their workers like shyt and have some fukked up ass policies.

Granted I make $18.85 and average about $23 a hour with my bonus money :pacspit: if you work at the store lol.

What type of company would pay a employee with a decent amount of overtime MORE than a manager? Dudes be look at some of the managers like "fukk YOU fukk BOY I make you than you "

Maybe I just need to much money but I can't understand how these dude I work with feed their families on this bullshyt ass wage. I live with my girl and have no children. Maybe I just need $70,000.

I want to end up in a small accounting firm, fukk BIG BUSINESSES WHO DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR WORKERS!.

That's one of the reasons I left. I was on salary working anywhere from 60-90 hours a week, running the overnight. Completely exhausted.

But I was able to take that experience and get an hourly position with another company making more money. So it worked out.
