look at it from RZA's point of view too.....you can see how the others gave him an artistic lane to work with....

how do you market U God?.....what was his angle?.....he wasn't lyrical like GZA, he wasn't a smoked out panty raider....he wasn't a Wu Gambino.....he wasn't wild like ODB....

he had no lane....no character....nothing for RZA to work with....

that being said....RZA is kinda cold on U God in this Nardwuar interview.....he asks him who's beside him and he looks around the room for someone other than U God to introduce

Damn, U-God looks like Dr. Dre there. Yeah that was kinda cold.

I also think U-God is hard to market. he and Cap were the most difficult to market, I think. They suffered from being part of such a large group with so many big personalities. It's kind of wild in hindsight how marketable most of the Clan was. Meth and ODB both oozed personality. Raekwon and Ghost had the street tales, and both of them (especiallt Ghost) also had a ton of charisma. GZA and Deck were both incredibly clever lyricists that were also kind of enigmatic. RZA was the leader and was an oddball with a weird flow to go with his beats.

Masta Killah was king of enigmatic like GZA and not as marketable as the previous names, but still had a sense of mystery around him and that straight talking flow that really stood out.

Cap didn't have a ton of personality but he at least had some really standout verses like Winter Warz, and people knew who he was from the Ice Cream video and because he was billed as a co-star on Ghost's first album and was on the cover.

U-God was on an island sort of. He didn't have any bad verses really but also no real stand out verses, not many verses that ended up being in videos, and he was just kind of there. Not whack at all but not a personality to sell either. I didn't end up appreciating U-God until Forever. He's got some really good verses on there but at that point Wu was at their peak and most of the members that would establish themselves as solo artists had already done so.

Fair enough, but beyond sampling laws, I believe RZA did have an encounter in a Guitar Center or something with an artist that he sampled, and it changed his perspective on sampling in what I think was for the worse. He genuinely started believing that sampling heavily was stealing and/or less creative, and that's also part of the reason why he moved away from it.
Thus the bob digital era.

U God is a better an mc than y'all like to say on here :yeshrug:
Right?

He's simultaneously the weakest or 2nd weakest Wu member and at the same time is better than most people say he is.

People may crucify me for this but RZA is probably the Wu member that I can take for the least amount of time. He's got some fire verses, and he's dope as fukk, but his flow is kind of jarring and does get a little tough for me to listen to for an entire album. Even GZA said that RZA was a dope lyricist but that he really wished he would smoothen out his flow a little bit. But in my experience fans that love RZA as a rapper like the fact that his flow is off-kilter, so what do I know?

He is but that doesn't excuse him from some of the bullshyt he does. The over the top RZA slander is ridiculous at this point. Matter of fact, it was ridiculous when he was calling him a devil and then admitted it was just all a publicity stunt.

I get that but their relationship is past rap and being MC's so its not wrong for U GOD to think like that. If you think about it you mean to tell me that 2 fonding memebers of the wu first lp couldn't even get production like wu syndicate and la the darkman :wow:????

Naw, all the rest of them got a similar relationship with RZA but he takes it to levels the others don't. Good portion of his book is basically blaming RZA for everything that goes wrong in his life. And that getting on the radio and calling a nikka that probably saved your life a devil just for publicity is crazy, I don't care what type of relationship they have with each other. U-God would probably be dead or in jail if it wasn't for RZA.

Also... RZA wasn't supplying these Wu affiliates beats like that. shyt, RZA only has 1 beat on any of those 2 acts albums throughout their WHOLE career. Dudes gotta stop running with this false narrative that RZA was spending time making beats and marketing other acts at that time when he wasn't.

Survival of the fittest
Daam.

Whats crazy is, I feel RZA is actually the weakest MC out the group..and oddly enough the GZA is the best.
RZA weaker than Dirty, who he wrote lyrics for?
U-God and Masta Killa don't have anything on the level of Sunshower, Dangerous Mindz, or Domestic Violence to name a few verses

Their albums are better in my opinion, but why are people blaming RZA for that?

If I remember correctly wu syndicate was under wu tang productions.

Yes they were, but if you read or listened to any of their interviews they tell you that RZA had little to do with the crafting of that album. Album had no Wu MCs on it and only 1 track by a Wu producer (Mathematics). Matter fact, most of that album was done before they even signed the Wu deal.

So Rza wrote ALL of ODB's lyrics?

Wow, didnt know that.

And yep. I'd rather watch and listen to ODB rap than RZA.

Was never really a fan of RZA's stop n go fast flow. :yeshrug:
