Stop it, picture him performing My Uptown Beat
Because it woulda felt so inorganic. NY/Eastcoast nikkas during that time literally grew up on and collected Kung fu flicks. It was different for Hip Hop but it made sense seeing that they were from NYC.
Don’t underestimate yourself.
Anyways...@Xerces ain’t wrong. But the difference is, Wu didn’t seem to use that as a gimmick, per se. You got the impression they was really into that chit. Like with the movie samples and all that, and kicking the Eastern knowledge. And, (probably most important of all) they weren’t dressing like Afu-Ra or trying to shoehorn Kung-Fu into every song/appearance/interview they did - like ICP. That’s what makes something a “gimmick”.
Sidebar: imo Three 6 Mafia did a good job walking this line also.
And I think the only reason people say “U-God is the most surly dude in the Clan” is because
he just talks more than Rae. It seems like Rae has been trying to prove he doesn’t need Wu
ever since after Purple Tape.
"I don't rap I SING ON THIS BEATTTT" AND do shyt my wayyyyyy
Not just the east coast, I remember old theaters in KC would play kung fu flicks. Not to mention TV had marathons on Sunday mornings. This would've been the early 80's.
I dunno if you remember it but there was a place, I think called The Imperial that would play karate movies in KC. It was on Main, where the Alamo currently is.
Fred.
I don’t remember, but I’ve only been here since the mid-90s...but I believe it.
I do remember this was a wave. No matter where you were at, there were always 1 or 2 dudes
who seen every Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly movie and was really wit’ it wit’ it. That’s why:
- The Last Dragon was so dope. Not because there was a lot of dudes like Sho ‘Nough, but there
were as many other people in a neighborhood like “why is Junior dressed like a ninja?”
- when the New Edition miniseries came out it was so funny Ralph Tresvant was this dude.
He’s like that poster Gravity that got banned. Dude was mad as fukk all the time for years since he was Doeboy on sohh U-God is like him posting in real life.I keep getting that video recommendation too. Haven't clicked it yet but sheesh, U god gotta be the most disgruntled rapper ever. Like, he wakes up mad at shyt.
He should be apologizing for RZA for wasting valuable minutes on Forever with that.Yet, Black Shampoo was that hot shyt?

If there were stats on this, they would probably confirm it’s at least a top 10 most skipped track ever.
Yet, Black Shampoo was that hot shyt?
U God is dope
Oh ok nah this would've been the early 80's. I think by the mid 90's it was closed down.
It's funny you mention "The Last Dragon", I actually watched that at The Imperial.
And yeah, I dunno why kung fu flicks caught on in some cities and didn't in others, but the Wu stuff wasn't really strange at all to me. I just figured they grew up watching kung fu flicks. Hell, back then I thought it was common.
