I knew a lot of nikkas into martial arts flicks, they just never had the money or freedom to actually express it like Wu. I just figured they ended up making enough money to really be themselves lol, I didn't really see it as much of a gimmick.

Exactly.

Not to mention, even if it was a gimmick, gimmicks never really had a negative connotation in hip-hop. Look at the whole horrorcore sub-genre....or DAS EFX shooting videos in the sewer to show out "underground" they were. As long as you were dope nobody really cared if you had a gimmick or angle. :manny:

But yeah....the oddest thing to me initially about Wu wasn't the kung fu stuff....it was how many people were in the group. I remember the first time I seen them on YO! MTV Raps when they got interviewed I was like :dahell: "why are all these people there?" not realizing they were actually all rappers. :dead:

even if U God was dope, SOMEONE has to be the worst in a Group of 9 MCs. And he has had moments when he was dope I’m not sure if he’s ever had the best song on the album or best verse in the song.

Raw like cocaine str8 from Bolivia verse is his only shining moment. He was solid overall tho

This dude always been a miserable a$$hole who don't like nothing lol. He said Killarmy was wack! Everybody got their opinion, but still....

I was saying in that Speed Racer thread it's funny how Ghostface used the cartoon in Daytona 500 when U-God has got a similar personaility, just being an a$$hole all the time. I remember many years ago probably in the late 90s Method Man said U-God is gonna be a grumpy old man lol.

Everybody in the clan has had their grievances, but he just seems to go overboard with it.

I'm a Wu Stan but I don't really remember anyone calling the Kung Fu thing a gimmick. As a 90s kid myself all the way out in Central Africa we were watching all kinds of kung-fu flicks all the time, I actually assumed that part of the Wu's success is that they tapped into something damn near everyone could relate to

It definitely was a gimmick, but a lot of rappers had gimmicks in the early 90s. From De La Soul's hippie phase to Onyx's cartoon violence.

From day one I always thought that Wu-Tang and all that Kung Fu shyt was wack and gimmicky and I'm a old school dude that grew up in the 80's loving karate movies. The whole karate, kung fu shyt was not needed.
