It definitely was a gimmick, but a lot of rappers had gimmicks in the early 90s. From De La Soul's hippie phase to Onyx's cartoon violence.

I hear you. My understanding of a "gimmick" is something artificial that brehs aren't really into (not saying it's the right understanding, just how I understand it) and just use this or that environment as a phase or whatever. Kind of like a temporary interest and/or something they know will work. But from reading intw and books etc it's obvious Rza was really into kung-fu flicks and then studied the whole thing (even travelled all the way to China iirc), I think Ghost was the other one who was really into it. To me it's almost like saying sampling old soul records is a "gimmick", but how could it be if they really grew up on that music and it's "part" of them as individuals.
What's the line between a "gimmick" and something brehs are really into?:jbhmm:But again it may be my understanding of what a gimmick is that is kind of wrong:yeshrug:

If southern dudes came out with that Kung fu shyt it would have been labeled as corny

Back then all that matter was skills, you was free to be yourself, if nikkaz liked kung fu they liked kung fu

Kung Fu movies was the shyt in the 60-70s, when these nikkaz was kids, grown as men was dressing like bruce lee and shyt

walking around harlem like Bruce Leroy, you have to take in the context of time
this video was dope, back then people actually put creativity and thought in their videos

The south made real hip hop back then, it's not comparable to the trash south people wanna pretend ain't trash

Because it woulda felt so inorganic. NY/Eastcoast nikkas during that time literally grew up on and collected Kung fu flicks. It was different for Hip Hop but it made sense seeing that they were from NYC.

U god talks of a child hood that never was.

So he has definite disconnect socially to the kung fu flicks.
Yet every major urban area i went to especially on the east coast similar to at home in chicago growing up. At elem...samurai showdown came on and we did not go outsode on saturday till one after samurai showdown. No kids were outside before elem.
Simply because no one missed samurai showdown and we were all going outside to attempt kung fu afterwards.
So not sure how or why he dissed this besides.
He had severe disconnect.
Plus the way rza souled't out with prince rakeem.
It was sheer brillance to frame wu tang as a kung fu based collective.
As rza had to do what most kung fu flicks feature.
Get yo ass whipped and or duped by the shogun
Then train with ya guys for the get back.

Sheer brillance.

With the kung gu samples especially in the wake of the prison industrial economy going full marketing blitz. It created nostalgia of how it was before crack.
So given u god's background i can see the disconnect. Yet the idea he is publically showing so much vitroil to the clan is uncalled for.
