The fact that this is a discussion proves that folks throw the word classic around too loosely.

Also just because you individually really like an album/something doesn’t make it a classic.

Exactly

There hasn't been many classic albums in music history

Classic is like Grammys to these dudes now

Imo, a classic album has to have a few qualifications. And all the albums listed in this thread fall short of that.

People really listing American Gangster & Yeezus as classics when majority of folks would consider those the worst albums to be released by the respective artists.

False. Using Classic generously, they both have 2 (RD, BP, CD, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy). Calling LR or Graduation a classic album is stretching the definition of classic. If those are classic because they sold and had hits then Vol 2 and BP3 are classics. And if albums like Yeezus and American Gangster are classic then any good album is a classic basically.

Personally I think Jay's catalog is a lot stronger though. Vol 1 is a better hip hop album than any Kanye album.

Classic is not some sacred term. It really is loose terminology that refers to any album that aged well and some semblance of impact. There are a lot of albums that are classic, but not many that are truly iconic.

I wish I could find my post where I break down my thoughts on classic/masterpiece/great albums and their comparisons.

Anyways, Kanye might have more “classic” albums but I wouldn’t say he’s superior.

By definition, I don’t think American Gangster qualifies as a classic, but 808’s & Heartbreak might very well be one by definition…

But American Gangster is still a better album than 808’s & Heartbreak, because the labeling of classic doesn’t make it infallible in the argument of quality.

Ye has mbdtf but his other work has been tarnished. I can’t even listen to college drop out without disturbing disgust as to what Kanye has become.

J on the other hand has the blueprint and the black album.

Also j’s catalog holds up much better than ye’s. Decades from now people will rather put on a jay z album the Kanye.
