I’d love it if they took it all the way in terms of the failing memory/mistaken indentity theme
. I got a wild theory
.
We know from season’s past that Pizzaloto likes to introduce the killer early in the season in some innocuous, unremarkable way, right? What’s the likelihood that the same interracial couple that the guy said he saw on his property before were the same ghosts following Will and Julie on Halloween? I’d say, low.
What if it was a mixed race couple that took the kids, but not in the sense people think (i.e. a black woman and a white man)? That white guy had a brown sedan that Hays saw Amelia with in episode 2. He’s never mentioned again. I also don’t think Amelia has ever offered an alibi for that night. Why does Amelia need a copy of that picture of the ghosts? I wonder if she kept it (covering her tracks)? What if she’s looking for the man with one eye to understand the connection to Hoyt, and not the disappearance itself (because she knows what happened)? I even think when Hays reads her book and comes across “Children should laugh,” he interprets it as a line from Lucy, but it’s actually Amelia quoting herself through Lucy. In the preview for next episode — old Roland says, “All this time. The hell were you doing?” I think he’s talking about Hays overlooking certain things about his wife when they discover her involvement.
I think both could be true. Julie is Hoyt’s b*stard biological daughter with Lucy (hence his attempts to keep an eye on her, the hush money to Lucy, etc), AND Amelia still had something to do with the disappearance.
