I actually rewound the scene to doublecheck what happened.
They BOTH shot him. Hayes got the final killing shot as they were struggling on the ground.



They already suggested that it may have been an accident. If it wasn't an accident, then it was that the boy came back and saw more than he was supposed to and they couldn't leave any witnesses.

I could buy that he saw too much since he was older and probably understood what was going on. I have no idea how that wouldn't affect the girl though, but I guess we don't really know if it did or didn't.

100% agree, but I can't get my head around why they killed the boy though.

I can accept this to be the case (though this is a pretty elaborate story for it to be that simple), but Julie had drawn pictures of the Pink Room prior to her being missing. Had she been at the Hoyt place before? Were they paying Lucy to have Julie visit because she resembled the dead daughter, and just decided "hell with it" she's mine now? Damn, you could've just adopted a kid.

THE RICH HOYTS RECREATED THE ROOM
SO SHE WOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE AFTER THE KIDNAPPING.

I'm guessing she wasn't mentally stable enough to realize her kid was dead to begin with, which is why they did all of this.

Reading this just made me have a weird thought.
What if Lucy didn't give up her kid for money? Maybe she was somehow responsible for getting Isabel's kid killed in an accident a couple of years earlier, and they pressured her into giving up her own kid as part of some kind of "eye for an eye" thing. So she thinks she can give up her daughter, then just take the son an leave town with her cousin.

I bet the "Children should laugh" line was something that Isabel told her. She said she could give her daughter a better home where she would grow up happy and laughing.

Sir they did not want just any old kid they want want one that look as close to their daughter they could get and that was julie .

Sir they did not want just any old kid they want want one that look as close to their daughter they could get and that was julie .

There's a repeated theme of dopplegangers/mistaken identity here:
1) Two black men with one eye
2) Hayes mistakes the Hoyt maid's daughter for his own daughter
2) Lucy's daughter replaces Isabel Hoyt's daughter
