Vince booted him, AEW takes him in, gives him a good contract. Soon as Trips took over, he wants Regal back. Regal, by using the failing health of Khan's mom, guilt trips Khan into letting him out of his contract early. He goes back to WWE, only to have Vince slowly take control back.

Will Washington, who was simultaneously on Shawn Michaels NXT media call, informed Khan that Michaels noted on his call that William Regal was not very involved with NXT, and was predominantly working with the main roster.
Washington asked Khan if he felt deceived regarding the reasons Regal asked to be released from his AEW contract. Regal, at the time, told Khan that he wished to work with his son, who is currently assigned to the NXT brand.
Khan said "I'm not there" and can't speak to how Regal is being used, and that he "just tried to be accommodating to him". Khan closed his answer by saying "but that's interesting", with what clearly came across as a slightly aggravated tone.
