This show was surprisingly good. I'm from London & I personally found the first two seasons to be mediocre at best. I think the longer season length really helped flesh out a lot of the characters.

The actor who plays Jamie in particular was amazing. What I liked the best was that the lingo was pretty natural, too many times when they try to portray London slang on screen it's too cartoonish.

9/10 for me.

P.S. breathed a sigh of relief when they killed the Dave character. Way too flamboyant for the nature of the show.

it’s cool to watch the other seasons to get a feel for some of the relationships but to basically say it renders it unwatchable isn’t fair...if that was your personal experience then so be it

I watched the first episode of Season 3, stopped then went back to watch the other ones. I've finished season 1 (10/10 television honestly) and now I'm on the 2nd season.

Honestly, I hope television moves to these 4 season type episodes. Feels like an elongated movie and a lot of the character development is done up front. Season 1 was so tight. Felt like there wasn't wasted dialogue or scenes.

ya I can absolutely understand some ppl feeling the need to do that but to act like it’s a “fact” and it MUST be done in order to enjoy this season was bizarre to me...I had a hard time remembering exactly why dushane went to jamaica and why sully was in prison even tho it’s easy to take a fair guess but that didn’t stop me from watching this season one bit...that being said I understand it’s entirley subjective to the viewer

Agreed. Which is why homechick said he had morals and he tried to duck it saying "you don't know me".

the characterization is on point...arguably on par w/ the wire (I’m not comparing the shows as a whole) in its ability to realistically “humanize” (I hate that word but can’t think of another right now) ppl who would otherwise be categorized/boxed in solely as bad men/criminals...jamie’s story was incredible...loved the bond they showed he had w/ his brothers as their dad, their mom and older brother as he phrased it

I mean, you don't need to do anything but stay black and die. You could start watching any show from any season and still enjoy if it is a quality show. But you're unquestionably missing key elements that would've enhanced your enjoyment. Top Boy is fairly unique in that the first season happens, then four years after that the second season happens and then 6 years after that the latest season happens. Time jumps like that dictate character growth and if you haven't watched the first two seasons you've quite factually missed out on a major element to the show.

lol don’t do that but re: the show I disagree...the way this season of top boy was set up (it was even refreshed and presented as season one and not three lol) a new viewer can easily watch it w/o feeling lost...yes there are some subtle things they will miss out on but nowhere near enough to be distracted from watching the season...it’s disingenuous to try and paint this as the equivalent of jumping into a random season of another series that traditionally airs on a yearly basis

there’s a 6 year gap between S2 and this new season...the writers can’t assume that everyone is going to go back and watch the first 2 mini-series so it has to be written in a way to still capture a new audience but of course there are some tidbits for old audience members that tie into the previous mini-series that new audiences can watch but don’t necessarily have to in order to enjoy this new season

they are not going to bring the series back to life 6 years later and dub it S1 but make it contingent on viewers needing to watch a previous 8 hours of television in order to “get it”...would it help a little? absolutely ....but is it necessary viewing? not @ all

You don't necessarily have to watch the first two seasons of The Wire to enjoy season 3....I know this for a fact, cuz I know people who've done it lol

So sure, you can enjoy the season, but you're unquestionably missing out on things that would enhance your enjoyment. With this show, for example, you can't fully appreciate the Sully/Dushane dynamic without seeing the first two seasons. And the Dris betrayal. And the Sully/Jason relationship don't hit the same either

ok you’re not getting it even tho I explained the difference between top boy w/ it’s 6 year gap between the last season and the current one vs. a series that practically aired yearly...so it’s just some going in circles shyt @ this point

of course watching the previous mini-series will give him a “full appreciation” fwiw and yes folks should watch it cuz it’s good television...I disagreed w/ the one dude who made it seem like the current series is rendered “unwatchable” w/o seeing the previous seasons...2 wildly different statements

nah, I get it, of course it's not "unwatchable" but the point I'm making is that even a show like The Wire isn't "unwatchable" if you start from season 3, it's just not advised or as fulfilling. It's not as fulfilling here either.

And I brought up the time jumps lol

I’m not sure you do bcuz it’s an irrelevant point that you’re bringing up that slightly obfuscates mine bcuz it’s a different scenario...the “lack of fulfillment” you’d get from skipping the first 2 seasons (25 episodes) of a continuous series that aired on a yearly basis for the most part is not the same as skipping 2 seasons (but only 8 episodes) of a mini-series that concluded 6 years ago and was resurrected...I can’t break it down any more than that
