This looked unwatchable and embarrassing, a bunch of 90's faded stars playing 21st century explorer dress up, with flashy, tacky, hamfisted CGI.....I think this will flop miserably this weekend, though I guess there isn't very much competition.

Crazy to me we won't have anything till 2019. You'd think they'd have something for next year

I think they went...sigh, if there's one thing cats need to take from Kevin Feige, it's the idea that you just make your first movie, sow the seeds for the future, but make sure its self contained. Don't announce you're doing this big thing, just do it. When Iron Man dropped, we didn't know there'd be this long form story playing out over 10 years. Cats keep trying to put the cart before the horse and it hamstrings their storytelling abilities

Feel so bad for Universal on this move, couldn't have picked a worse release date, would have been better off playing up more horror and releasing this in October, than trying to get everything started between Wonder Woman and Cars

Exactly. They put the cart before the horse. On the real, them trying to do a spider man universe, and labeling it that way, wasn't a good look then and I never felt it was a good look. Just make your movie. Close the loop. Set up lose strands for the next one yeah but close the fukking loop. They tried to go too big too quickly when the first movie worked so well being intimate and smaller and building the world from the inside out rather than outside in, which is how they reverse engineered it. They shoehorned Harry in there when it was clear from the first movie Peter had no idea who the hell Harry was:russ: ugh...wasted potential

Critics seem to hate any blockbuster these days unless it's Disney :francis:

:deadmanny: @ saying this (and @Prodigal Syndicate dapping it) a week after Wonder Woman got rave reviews and two weeks after Disney's PotC movie got shytted on by critics almost as hard as The Mummy.

Be a Disney conspiracy theorist, brehs.:mjlol:

"You’ve no doubt been told that if you can’t say something nice, you shouldn’t say anything at all. If I followed that rule, I’d be unemployed. But still. There’s no great joy in accentuating the negative. So I will say this in favor of “The Mummy”: It is 110 minutes long. That is about 20 minutes shorter than “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” about which I had some unkind things to say a couple of weeks ago. Simple math will tell you how much better this movie is than that one. If you have no choice but to see it — a circumstance I have trouble imagining — you can start in on your drinking that much sooner."

not surprised the movie doing bad and getting shyt on...nothing about this shyt looks good...they hyping up a 'dark universe' and their monsters, but nothing about this movie says dark nor monsters....so what it's named 'the mummy'?....it looks like an action film first and foremost, with a mummy type character playing second, even third fiddle...and it shouldnt be that way...the monsters should be the lead first and foremost in these movies/this universe....everything should revolve around them...

also, since these movies are about monsters, they should be more horror than anything....

i disagree....in this day and age where people like to know things, there is nothing wrong with them announcing plans of a larger universe....you just gotta plan for it......if feige announced they were gonna do a universe before iron man, and followed the same plan they've done, i highly doubt much wouldve changed with how it was received......the issue here seems to be universal didnt plan the universe out...you dont announce a dark universe revolving around your monsters, and launch that with an action movie about the mummy....you make a horror movie about the mummy....and even then, while the mummy is a known monster, you gotta come with your heavy hitters first: dracula, frankenstin, or wolfman...seriously, they following this movie up with 'frankenstin's bride'...they havent even introduced frank yet, but you gonna introduce his bride? no, just no....

to use marvel for comparison again: i know people like to act like iron man, hulk, thor, & capt were some low level, unknown characters before the movies, but that wasnt true....out of the characters marvel had left with access to, they were the heavy hitters....hulk, thor, and capt are 3 of their 5 most popular characters (spidey and xmen being the other 2)....and iron man is probably #6...i mean, he had a cartoon before the xmen.....anyway, marvel took those and started the uni, then they brought in other characters....if they did it like universal doing, they wouldve started the universe with ant-man, and followed it up with bucky, which wouldve just been a 'no, just no' thing to do....

No the point is, you spend so much time planning for the bigger picture you don't focus on making your one picture contained and as dope as it should be and one story. Thats what I mean and what I think people miss about trying to copy what's been done. They put the cart before the horse while not making sure the horse is in fine shape and can carry you.

I think both of you are right and none of either of your stances is contradictory.

I agree. Every movie should be a complete story with connecting elements. Not just a to be continued or "hey watch this one 1st because 4 more will follow"
