Rihanna was always primed for the international, pop-crowd. Pon de Replay & SOS are dancehall/pop songs. Not RnB.



SOS was a big hit but the album sold poorly initially. But they kept promoting her & it. Because powerful people believe in her.

Once again, i'll repeat. They had StarGate produce Rihanna songs and singles from album #1. You don't get StarGate to produce songs for your artists unless you think they will be internationally acceptable. I'm from the UK, Rihanna was here promoting her very first album. Your average RnB artist (TM!) doesn't get that push.

I think you guys are thinking about this from an urban/RnB angle. Teairra's music was primed for the BET crowd and it might've seemed to you she was getting the bigger push. But Rihanna was never targeted at the RnB crowd - she was headed straight for Billboard. That fits because that's what her management specialised in..Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera type records. Look at who produced/wrote her early singles. Rihanna's never been an RnB artist.

I was into urban and just music period and I don't even remember Teairra Mari getting a big push like that. I thought she wasn't even gonna reach or surpass Ashanti level. And I thought that was the lane they were putting her in.

Rihanna was promoted as R&B early on but she didn't have the voice...I remember Tierra Marie being thought of as a better product but she wasn't great either. She then started doing more of what you would call R&B based Dance-Pop (Janet Jackson also did this type of music back in the 90's which overlapped with madonna's work) which blew up because this is round the time the whole EDM/HOuse/Dance thing started getting big in the USA.
