No one chose Jay Z when DMX was going hot.

Jay was right behind X. Summer 98, X had the clear lead. Hov was right behind him with "Hard Knock Life" with that Annie sample, despite a massive musical risk, came in and did 5x platinum that year alone. Had people from other countries rocking with Jay.

Yes..98 is when he blew up after Hard Knock Life but DMX dropped those albums that were going strong and Mase went into 98 hot as fukk.

That little lyrical sparring match between Ma$e and Jay went on, and Hov was killing them features and "Streets are Watching" before "Hard Knock Life" dropped. He was prepping to take over for the long haul, while X dropped 3 albums in a 19 month period and sold over 15 million in just 2 years. Hov played chess, while everyone else was on that checkers nonsense.

1998

Mase was everywhere..never even heard of DMX until Harlem World the year before.

Juvenile was blowing up after Ha..he stretched that single out until near mid 99.

Jay Z did the Rush Hour song with Ja Rule and Amil and Hard Knock Life. Much like Britney Spears, from 98 to 2003, Jay Z had singles come out almost every two months..

Jay was never the absolute biggest rapper. There’s nothing wrong w that tho. He was always in the top 5. Will Smith (y’all can hate or say it doesn’t count but the album was a monster ), Lauryn Hill, and DMX were bigger in 98. After that was Aftermath
