Duncan didn't announce himself publically as the great player that he was cause self promotion wasn't his thing. He could have been 28/15 for the prime of his career if he chose to focus on numbers but he was always about team success. He gets knocked for being a system player when many don't realize that he WAS the system in San Antonio and it was only cause of his unselfishness and ability to accept criticism that the system was able to thrive in the first place. Pop is lauded as a great coach but that didn't start until they drafted Tim cause before that Pop was probably on his way out with the Spurs. I've got him at number 6 on my list after Jordan Bron Cap Magic and Kobe but i can see cats like Dream Shaq and Bird over him but even if he isn't in your top five he's for sure top 10 ever no doubt if we are being honest with ourselves.

How was he THE SYSTEM and they won 67 games the season after he retired?

Timmy was a great player...top 5 leader of all time, sure...top 5 winner of all time, sure

But top 5 player of all time, HELL NO

He took too many games off to be top 5...that boy coasted through the reg season

Load mgmt started with him, Gino & Tony

The man averaged 13 pts a game when ppl said he was still in his prime

Give me a break

Great player, top 15 player, but not top 5

Everywhere...You never there.
Considered the best ever at his position

5 rings...
3 times finals mvp...
2 time mvp...
15 time all nba selection...
15 time all defensive selection...

Seems like a top 5 player to me... Timmy Lebron and Jordan...you can make the case for any order 1 - 3
Big Fundamental:wow:

But yet we get spammed with “Steph as a potential goat” threads every fukkin day .

thank you OP for putting things in perspective .

LeBron is better any “disappearing” act he had early in his career was because they loaded up on him with zones and wall defenses. The only series you could be talking about are the ‘07 Finals (one of the most lobsided series in history) and ‘10 ECSF (where he played through an elbow bruise on his shooting arm). Dude literally dominated every other series at a higher ramp than Duncan generally played at.

Duncan was not efficient in the ‘05 or ‘07 Finals it just didn’t matter because his teams were better. LeBron didn’t have guys like Ginobili or Parker.

He’s not Duncan he’s a perimeter player who initiates at the top of the key.

Did you watch the 2011 NBA Finals?

U said early part of his career so I assumed you were talking Cleveland first stint.

And again that was also a zone, wall defense they threw at him. LeBron was a perimeter player and an initiator at the top of the key it’s different.

Anyway Duncan wasn’t better than LeBron.

Duncan isn't in the Top 5 because he coasted for more than half of his career. He was barely a 20ppg scorer after year 9 or so. Dude was getting his Sheed Wallace on throughout the seasons.

Honestly, a few of those playoffs he coasted as well. The best post-season was easily that '02. He was getting to where he wanted, and commanding the ball. Not doing that lackadaisical system game he often used. You wanted your best player to take over, not play within the system. I think that's the reason they never won b2b.

So Cal
And all those other guys named would have more....but its a no anyway...

This isn't even news, its something I think is generally accepted by most basketball heads. You can literally line Kobe side by side with all of his historical peers and evaluate playoff performances and he's the guy who consistently grades out lower...

We all know what Kobe is to the game and the culture overall, but he's more of an OD elite regular season warrior than a habitual A-level postseason assassin, yet there are peers of his who were both, peers of his who did both on a higher level, and the playoffs are where these guys separated themselves from an otherwise dead heat...

Duncan isn't the most dominant player in postseason lore but his highs are higher than Kobe's...
:mjlol: Where were these highs when Kobe was sending him packing?

Sam Jones has 10 and was the closer on the most dominant team in the history of American team sports and most people don't know who he is. Dude doesn't even make top 50 lists.

We all know what it is with Timothy. If he was an a$$hole or flashy or selfish folks would be calling him GOAT. He's the reason, I can't take sports fans seriously when they complain about dudes seeking attention or being selfish or putting up empty stats. He was everything sports fans claim they want in a player and yet they would rather ignore him while drooling over the very guys they swear they hate.

All this system player shyt when Kobe had his chance to prove he could win outside of Phil's system and failed miserably. :mjlol:

they not gonna respond to this shyt tho

but you know what i noticed? A Tim Duncan thread ALWAYS gets filled with Kobe talk. Kobe stans are the most insecure stans in sports.

A decade of two way dominance isn't enough breh? How many guys got longer stretches of dominating BOTH ends of the court? He took a step back offensively, but he was still a defensive force. He did what folks swear they want guys to do and that is let other cats cook. Are you really suggesting that Tim Duncan wasn't taking over playoff games breh? Swept Shaq (with more talent) out of the forum in year 2 with nobody else averaging more than 14 pts without taking over games? The year after the one you mentioned, was one of the all-time underappreciated carry jobs. They never went back to back because he was carrying the squad on his back against the likes of Kobe and Shaq and they didn't get that ref love we've seen other great squads get. You give him the squads that Shaq has had, and the ref love some of his squads have received, and he surpasses Russell and forces ya'll to call him GOAT.

Because he was too quiet.

People hate on athletes for being arrogant, sensitive, and caring what others think. But they don't realize that being that way makes people put respect on your name when you succeed

When you're too quiet, humble, etc. People tend to forget about you.

Barry Sanders is one of the few quiet players that people still rep.
