I would also like to say religion is not supposed to be hard. The old testament was a ball and chain on people that was almost impossible to follow, which is why most "religious" people are viewed as hypocrites. Jesus made it very easy for us, giving salvation as a "gift".

Unfortunately a lot of people dont think its that easy. They assume that by living a certain way and by doing certain things you can "earn" your way into heaven. It is the Divinity of Jesus Christ that causes a stir. And whether you want to accept it or not.

That's cool. It's just kind of fukked up to me that for thousands of years, God judged people by a standard that is considered impossible to live up to. Trillions of people damned to hell because God made them human.

And then on the other side, you have this dogma where your merits and good deeds can't save you from hellfire alone. No, you also have to believe that this person/god lived and died for your sins, with very little evidence other than hearsay of unbelievable stories ... most of which, we don't even know the source of. You could help the sick and needy, never dare fantasize about a woman outside of marriage, and love everyone as if they were you, but if you don't believe these incredible stories about Jesus, then you will still go to hell. And at the same time, you can be purely evil, kill, rape, do every horrible thing imaginable, but if you believe in God, and truly repent, then you can ultimately be saved.

It's a fukked up system of morality that I believe no all-knowing, perfectly "good" deity could or would have thought of.

that's really for you to decide then Mayo. In one sense you talk of "fuked up systems" but then also leave no room for forgiveness. Even your standards seam a little jacked to me.

Bottom line is that humans are not the ultimate judges of eachother, God is. Now I can point out where we were given rules to LIVE by and even how God would judge us, but ultimately when it all counts you and God have a face to face, what he does with your good deeds and moral life is up to him, not you or me or anyone else. He MAY look at those deeds or he may not, I don't TRULY know, nor do i need to or care to.

Here's the thing, each and every person here has been exposed to the word of God, that's where the obligation of many ends, at some point it is a choice you either make or don't make that choices. You all know the consequences. Your door has been knocked on, the ball is in your court to open that door or not. :manny:

Christians specifically, but I know there's a substantial Muslim population in The Coli as well:

Why do you consciously sin?

If you think that there's a supernatural being, that constantly watches over you, and has a set of rules that he specifically wants you to follow, why don't you make a bigger effort not to break those rules?

If you think your God cannot be in the presence of sinful people, and will damn people who are not truly repentant for sins to a place of fire and torture and anguish ... why not devout your entire existence to that God? Why not set aside Earthly items, and focus solely on worshiping that being, spreading the gospel, and saving other souls who may not have heard the good news? Why do you need a job, why do you need money? Don't you think if you did this, God would provide for you?

I appreciate your thoughts, friends.
This is a interesting take, Truly believing in a God and what he is able to do should be incredibly life altering. I mean, if you follow this book you will go to HEAVEN when you die. The most AWESOME place ever and you'll be there for ALL TIME! You'd think they'd be super excited about that...but then life and reality sets in when the book is based on doctrines formed thousands of years ago for another reality that existed in the past. We are NOTHING like humans (personality wise) from 2000 years ago.

Well, I'd say living "well" is pretty arbitrary, but if this life is the only one you get, then you could miss out on a lot of things by spending all your time worrying about religious doctrines.

It would be kind of sad for somebody to spend their whole lives worrying themselves to death over whether or not they'll go to hell when it doesn't really even exist. Or you could have people missing out on various experiences they'll never get another chance to have because they're scared something clashes with their religion.

YOLO (maybe) :manny:

that's the thing. In most cases the misconception about ...religion (re:Christianity) is that there's some sort of obsession with doctrine, that's really not how I live nor do most Christians.

Life is built such that choices you make limit experiences...but also open up other experiences, every choice you make is built that way.

As a Christian I've lived a full/fool life, most people do.

Aside from going to Church and what i believe my life doesn't differ to much from most.

Now are there people who take it to another level? Sure, there always will be, what their reward/punishment is will be between them and God.

What's funny is that most people do live "moral" lives. ...Most. Most people aren't out to fuk people over, most, if they saw someone thirsty would give them water, most, if they saw someone hurting, would give them comfort, most people genuinely care for other people...that's pretty fukin Christian to me. Add to that a belief in JC and you have a christian. And if that belief is all that's stopping someone from "eternal salvation"...then, well damn that just makes me sad. It's like going through the motions and not getting "credit" ad for what?

I mean really and honestly for those who have chosen to NOT believe why? Even if belief means you disgard "the church" as you know it and attempt to establish a personal relationship with God...why not?

I have already made a great effort to eliminate demonic characteristic from within. Now, i have some more to eliminate. In my rawest state, id be doing so much more demonic things compared to the mistakes i make right now. In the design of man we were made to make these decisions as a test to separate the trash from what is good. God knows you will falter and make mistakes but if you keep him in your heart, ask for his forgiveness and genuinely mean it, you are forgiven for your wrong doing. Man is not perfect which is why these checks and spiritual balances were set up for friends, friend. :gladbron:

I don't think there are many atheists that actually CHOOSE to not believe. I know I didn't. I just picked up on the inconsistency and improbability of it all and wasn't ALLOWED to believe.

which specifically?

Some people just don't believe in god, it's not a choice. Saying they choose not to is like saying you "choose" not to believe in Santa Claus, or you "choose" not to believe that 2+2=5.

It's not like people (at least most nonreligious people) somehow know god exists and just choose to ignore/disregard him because they don't like him or something. A lot of people just feel like god is something people made up to feel better about their mortality and how unfair life can be.

I hear you and understand. Can't argue that. Hard to prove 2+2=5, or rather hard to prove something exist when there is no proof. That's God. Takes faith and as i said it really is either a choice you make or choose not to make.

SO then for at least you and Fervid you don't believe because you can't? Or You choose not to? I don't buy that you can't, tbh, considering so many can and do for someone to be incapable of i'm not sure if I see that.

But i do see how believing can be contrary to what you think and feel.
