The most successful spider-man game Activision released was Spider-Man 2 that sold 2 million units, it was tied with shrek 2. Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions were flops, thats why they ultimately lost the license

It ain’t sales or critical reception, the Spider-Man gaming IP was fading into obscurity with Activision. Just because you got nostalgia blinders on for playing them in your pajamas don’t make them great games
You can’t weasel your way out of the reality of that with gamepass/sub/digital obscurity PR
Insomniac & Sony made Spider-Man a major gaming IP again that other games gotta get out of the way of.
