You can say that Em boosted his profile and prolonged his 'legacy' so to speak but the notion that L had no online hype prior to Em is false.

You didn't get on the Internet until late....

There are three instances in which he got big on the Internet prior to Eminem....

Premier/Gangstar giving him an RIP at the beginning of Full Clip....not only was it big on BET but that is around the time when people started ripping videos and uploading them...

Big L was on TONS of Prizer Fighter Remixes that circulated napster, kazaa, bearshare, etc.

When Deadly Combination came out, around when Pac had been dead and all those songs/remixes ended up coming out, it was big.

He was always just the other guy on the Jay Z freestyle (the 25-35 age range knows there were not too many jay Z freestyles back then, so finding one on Napster was a gem)

Then around like 02/03 punchline rap became heavy. Then we back to the Jay Z freestyle and then L started to get more buzz as the internet REALLY started to jump off with Khazaa, the old boxden (with the sites), etc.

By mid 03, the Dips were HEAVY and anything with Harlem was gold.

So with 02/03 punchline rap taking off + a HEAVY Harlem presence in the main stream + a freestyle where he goes head to head with the #1 rapper at the time (some say he got em, another convo for another day) = Super Big L Hype Machine

I believe that I am right on the OP's timeline.

For perspective purposes: I was 15 in 2002 and heavy into the Philly rap scene (sold mixtapes and chilled at the homie's crib who had the DVD player watching freestyle battles on Saturday mornings, late 80s babies know what I mean)

L was dead, those artists werent, people started giving L that legend propup since 99-00, thats like saying nobody put pun in their top 5 till joe dropped lean back or something, soon as these guys died those props began. i remember kids on the bus calling L the goat in like 00-01...

And you specifically said online so being anecdotes about being from Harlem isn't really germane to the threads premise.

I think what the issue is, some of these nikkas may not have been apart of that crowd, so it seems like L only came into focus after somebody in the mainstream shouted him out. But that whole EC/Rawkus wave was all about punchlines, L was highly respected.
