Unfortunately he never got a chance to fully live up to his potential. Pun at least dropped a classic before he passed.

Li
what was that nother level?? Big L was stuck in the underground. By 1995 Rap City was playing "Hip To The Game" and "Game Plan" by Finesse heavy...Big L had nothing on Rap City after those 2 songs by Finesse. Big L was doing the mixtape circuit which made sense because he was the most recent unlike Finesse who already had put in work. So what is this 'nother level u are refering to?

:jbhmm:

Just my opinion, L elevated his flow overtime. Finesse did too to a certain degree, but not as much.

This is a lie.
That 50 cent record came out in 2003.

Stop acting like the big picture didn't do numbers back in the year 2000. The Rawkus movement pushed that album.

Stop lying.

And I don't care about no 15 year old white kid putting Big L is his top 5. Neither should you.

and I'm from Harlem so I remember the timeline.

1998: Ebonics is heavy in the underground and I'm like 'Damn L is so nice but aint no one really paying attention. Say word he might go to The Roc?"

1999: Big L is killed and I'm in the Army where u have pretty much every race all over USA. And the only ones who spoke about it were NYC heads. Not even the wiggers who loved Hip Hop spoke about Big L. Me and the NYC heads were like "He was gonna blow if he actually went to The Roc":mjcry:

2000: Dj Premier does an interview where he says someone asked him who was "Big L" because thats who he shouts out on the intro of the song "Full Clip"/I'm Blasting "98 Freestyle" from The Big Picture out of my car as I pull into my driveway and my neighbor who is from Texas was like "who is that?"..I had to introduce him to Big L

2001: Camron shyts on Stan Spit and disrespects his mom. We remember Stan Spit for his verse on that Big L song and video "Hold It Down." "Hung out with you on mothers day because your mothers day" Cam - Dear Stan
:ohhh:

2002: Paid In Full, Game Over documentary, Come Home With Me...Dipset mixtapes..Camron is the biggest Hip Hop rep for Harlem followed by Kay Slay. Big L is an afterthought.

2003: Em says he's a mixture of Pac Biggie sprinkled with some Big L...when I first heard that I was like "Oh shyt...Em is acknowledging Big L?" :gladbron:This was before those racist tapes so it really made Em look like the coolest whiteboy on the planet.

Now: 'Big L was gonna be this and Big L was gonna be that' all over the internet as if thats how everyone was talking like that before the Em shout out. But u see my thing is , "well how come u dont acknowledge Lord Finesse?":stopitslime:

Everyone said Big L was a new version of Lord Finesse when he first came out anyone familiar with Hip Hop immediatly remembers seeing the familiarity between L and Finesse so acknowledging L while ignoring Finesse stands out to me. And I've been fukking with Hip Hop messageboards since the year 2000 so I know what I'm talking about. The Big L hype didnt start till Em gave that shout out on GRODT

True story, being at Truman HS in the Bronx we all heard the news of his death but nobody knew who he was? We couldn't pick him out of a line up but all of a sudden he was this rap messiah. It really pisses me off how people try to down play Mase impact when he became a top 3 artist after Biggie's death mostly 1997/98. The same thing goes for Stacks, dude was a third option on DJ Clue roster after Fabulous and Budden. It didn't work out well for him and Paul Cain after the mixtape game started to die out then he jumped on Dipset bandwagon. Nothing much both of these artist never made impact or captured the masses just underground average rappers who couldn't make a song or had a single mainstream hit.

So the guy who was on crooklyn cuts and numerous other mixtapes back in the 90s while having his video played on video soul gold wasn't more talked about by the online community until years later? You mean to tell me a very technical underground artist wasnt more well known?:troll:

Aye man, there's a reason why L was the one from DITC that was about to blow. He had that it factor.

L was a better rapper. He surpassed Finesse. He had "it".

Read the thread title again and ask yourself if I'm lying..Dont forget to read the "online" part when u re read it.
He was an underground sensation when he was alive. It was a small audience, but it was a well versed audience. He's never gonna be in that Big/Pac/Jay/Nas/Prodigy lane.

I dont think u are hearing me. Lord Finesse had 2 videos on heavy rotation on BET in 95 Big L had nothing after that. You stressing L about to blow....meaning he still didnt even have videos on BETs rotation at any point like Lord Finesse did in 95,

:patrice:

I mean yes..I agree that Big L could have been Rocafella Camron before Cam had he not have gotten killed but we cant speculate from what actually happened and up until that point Finesse already cemented himself as far as he could go. Big L about to blow doesnt mean anything compared to the way things actually were. Speculation doesnt count in this case.

I dont think one was better then the other. To me Big L was Lord Finesse the mid 90's version. I can understand liking one over the other but this surpassing thing u talking about was never made manifest. Like I said Finesse had 2 videos on heavy rotation in 95 after MVP.....and L didnt have anything in heavy rotation on BET after Finesse, so I dont see the surpassing u are refering to. If L had a big hit after 95 then yeah but that was never the case. in 97 and 98 L was still stuck in the underground waiting to finally pop while Finesse pretty much already cemented his status as far as he could go. So again I dont know what "surpassing" u are refering to....Now after death, yes Big L due to his death has surpassed Finesse by eons. Its to the point that Big Ls name is way more familiar. But I cant co sign what u are saying about Big L surpassing Finesse before his death. That would be like saying L surpassed AG or OC while alive when both had highly recognized LPs...Big Ls first LP wasnt the one, Like think about it...when Jewelz dropped Big L didnt have anything after that that was critically acclaimed until after his death...L didnt have a video in rotation on BET like OC had with this song

..so even up to that point L hadnt surpassed AG or OC. At most he was the next to blow from DITC....thats all I can give him.
