The funniest thing to me is how he was a middle of the pack MC WHILE alive. He came off as a bootleg Big Daddy Kane to us NY heads in the mid 90s. Doesn't mean he was trash, but how he became "the go to" guy to say he was an unknown great years later is more about folks wanting to prove they "know hip hop." And I'm a pretty reasonable guy. Big L definitely wasn't the GOAT when he was alive or at any point after. He's not even in my top ten.

I heard him on Stretch and Bob that day. My boys did a show with Jay, Foxy and Smooth the Hustla the year prior at Culture Club. Funny enough, it was Wendy Williams and her husband that promoted the show.

To say Jay was unknown in 95 is you trying to hard bruh. He was known just as much as Big L in the city then.

I wasn't in NY in 95 so I'll have to defer to you on that. My first memory of Jay is the Dead Presidents video.

I don't get the relevance of the question. L was a deceased artist who didn't have any new music coming out.
The list is up and coming artists plus Del who was coming off two projects in 2000. Even then, I don't remember a ton of hype on Del in 2001 and 2002.

I just dont see any correlation whatsoever.

I agree what most the people in here said, big Ls legend started after his death and was established by the hip hop community from the source to gangstarrs full clip shout out in 99-00-01.

By 2003 file sharing blewup and his freestyle with the now GOAT level jay z helped, his song with big and pac, being associated with cam,mase,etc all had way more to do with L being popular than eminem.

Again i dont know a soul who heard of big L through eminem and i am white so i know the type of people whi actually would listen to eminem... its just does not hold water to me.

I remember big L being in plenty of peoples top 10s circa 99-00-01 once he initially became popular with people who werent really hip hip fans. The same people with guys like 50 dmx and em in their top 10s.

I'm refering to the overhype that Big L got all after his death years later down the line as if people were really talking like that when he was alive. Yeah if u were a hip hop fan u knew who he was but the over hype thats online now didn't exist when he was alive nor was it around immediatly after his death. If u were fukking with
Big L in 94 and then u read how these new nikkaz talk about him now, the over hype stands out.
