Who Am I? I am Tariq Nasheed, the director of "Microphone Check," a groundbreaking documentary film that explores the untold and true origins of hip hop culture. With a background as the creator of the legendary "Hidden Colors" film series, I am no stranger to shedding light on important and often overlooked aspects of history. Our team includes a passionate group of individuals dedicated to bringing this vital narrative to life, and we are joined by some of the pioneers who helped shape hip hop into the cultural phenomenon it is today.

Early Hip Hop pioneer Grandmaster Caz

What is Microphone Check? "Microphone Check" is not just a documentary; it's a journey through time, uncovering the authentic roots of hip hop. We have gathered an incredible ensemble of early pioneers, including the likes of Coke La Rock, Trixie and Sara, Sha Rock, Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and many more, to share their firsthand accounts and insights into the birth and evolution of hip hop. Through compelling interviews, rare footage, and historical context, we aim to dispel myths and offer a comprehensive and accurate account of hip hop's history.

The legendary Melle Mel

Where did this project come from? The inspiration for "Microphone Check" emerged from the realization that the 50th anniversary of hip hop is a milestone worth celebrating and commemorating with a deep dive into its origins. As someone who has dedicated their career to exploring and illuminating the hidden facets of history, I saw an opportunity to set the record straight on hip hop's beginnings. We have already made significant progress by assembling these pioneers and capturing their stories on film, but we need your support to take this project to the next level.
