hollywood is racist...especially when it comes to casting and stereotypes and even more in the 90's
Also mobsters from Jersey are very likely pretty racist so the characters dropping the N word is probably more about portraying accuracy

I think a lot of u missed the point.
Scoresese and Chase are being objective and realistic in their depiction of Italian gangster's and their attitude towards black ppl... in turn they are also showing u how hypocritical and ignorant they are. DeNiro depicted this perfectly in A Bronx Tale when the young italian idiot's attempt to drive over into the black area and fire bomb the neighborhood.... while listening to Jimi Hendrix All Along The Watchtower.. before getting themselves killed...
These ppl have priveliges and codes not afforded to black folks and they STILL manage to do all if the things they claim they look down on black ppl for... having no loyalty, structure, snitching etc..Scorcese and Chase r essentially showing u how full of shyt they are.. Casino takes this point a step further.

After my 3rd rewatch tho, I realized the show wasn't as great as I thought it was

I think the only "positive" black characters were the priest and that dude who runs the HUD scam with Tony and Ralph. Positive in that the mafia guys treat them with respect. But overall negative because both of them cause harm to the black community, the priest for taking kickbacks in exchange for calling off legitimate protests about racist hiring practices, and the HUD guy for defrauding a government program that's supposed to help low-income families
