I think the only "positive" black characters were the priest and that dude who runs the HUD scam with Tony and Ralph. Positive in that the mafia guys treat them with respect. But overall negative because both of them cause harm to the black community, the priest for taking kickbacks in exchange for calling off legitimate protests about racist hiring practices, and the HUD guy for defrauding a government program that's supposed to help low-income families
no matter how mad meadow got at Tony, she stayed on code. I’m sure Rosalie, Meadow and even Carmella knew Jackie wasn’t murdered by drug dealers. But that’s the way it goes.
Pretty offensive stuff said by Santino Corleone in Godfather..by Tommy in Goodfellas....Been going through the series and this is definitely one of the things that stuck out. Some pretty offensive shyt said but I chalked it up to Italians really being on that type of shyt.
Cmon. Y’all are coming up with the same weak excuses that always get brought up when we talk about racism in gangster movies. It’s not about “bad guys being depicted as bad guys” it’s about black characters being depicted as stereotypical caricatures.
Every other character on this show, even the minor one offs like Bobby Baccala’s father is a “bad guy” but they are written with nuance and humor and given real personalities and their existence is usually related to the larger theme of the show...why can’t the exact same writers put that effort towards a black character?
I loved the show but I see no reason to defend an obvious flaw...
This was a classic thread. Still smh at defending the racist actions of the characters while missing the point that it has nothing to do with the racist, stereotypical portrayal of black people by the writers.
There are at least 8 different black characters on the Sopranos who are written decently and not as caricatures
- Massive Genius- his portrayal was type goofy but ultimately he was never intimidated by the Sopronos and took Hesh to court over the royalties. He had the Chopper suit on before it was hot
- Rev. James Jr
- Rev. James Sr
- Ray Ray
- Ray Ray's daughter
- Father Obosi
- Officer Leon Wilmore
- Dr Stokley Davenport
- Maurice Tiffen
Now lets dead this tired ass argument that the Sopranos portrayed most of the black characters negatively when in fact the opposite is true. Im sure there were racist writers on the show, but David Chases' objective for the series was to examine and condemn the modern day mobster, and on a macro level modern day society.
