there are some problematic black characters in the show but one could say that about all groups portrayed in the Sopranos as it's a show from 20 years ago. Even italians were hot about the show and its portrayals. I'll say this, Dutton was and is the most upright moral character in the entire show, and after that episode we really start to see the moral decay of Tony.
Meadow's half black boyfriend while annoying also show that the folks Tony thought beneath him and his family are way ahead and really shouldn't want anything to do with his family. You also had the black doctor who vouched for Tony about Ade not giving him head in the car crash. Then you also have the entire psychology at play when Tony blamed Black guys for jumping him when he actually had a panic attack due to a fight with his mother leading to the lil bit of beef him and his cousin Tony had. Race is a big part of the show and Tony's character. Some of the black characters had nuance for as little time as they had. I would say that Black characters overall got more of a fair shake than some other groups. I mean the only latinos I can remember being on the show were Melfi's rapist, the 1 colombian who got shot (refrying beans with Escobar), & the mexicans Paulie robber for the money in the dishwasher
I meant to respond to this way earlier but honestly the crew was washed in season 1, ep 1. The entire series is one big fall off of the mob and specifically the Sopranos crime family.
The first (or maybe one of the first, but it was early in season 1) convos Tony had with Melfi he acknowledges that "things are trending downward" and that his best days are behind him.
Fred.
the show really is an allegory for the Gen X and how they never could live up to baby boomers or deal with the damage they (bb) did to them. It's similar to Mad Men in a certain way of discussing America
