I read a book that cataloged every known number system throughout history and they were ALL base ten except for a babylonian system that used base 60 and the mayans who used base 20. Only ethiopian system i can recall of the top is the Ge'ez numerals and they were base 10. I'm all for celebrating mathematical history and anthropology but the bbc 4 video is pretty poorly explained. Can't comment on the fractal stuff.

The innovations the Arabs, Indians, Chinese, and CACs made to math did NOT improve on our long-winded and inefficient ancient Afrikan system. Why would you simply memorize a times table or multiply 9 by 10 and 5 and then add them when you could do this instead:

Lets do an example.

9 x 15

Step 1. You divide the number on the left over and over again until you get to "1". You ignore all decimals and simply work with whole numbers.
Step 2. You multiply the number on the right by 2 over and over again. If you have four numbers in the left column then you should have four numbers in the right column.
Step 3. Draw a line through all even numbers in the left column and disregard the respective line.
Step 4. Circle the numbers that you did not cross out.
Step 5. Add the sum of the number in the right column and you have your answer.

Example 9 x 15
Step 1.
9
4
2
1

Step 2.
15
30
60
120

Note: Step 1 and Step 2 are in columns and they are side by side.

Step 3.
Column1 Column 2
9......................15
4......................30
2......................60
1......................120

Step 4.

Ahh it was this one that made it simple.

If I had learned math like this, it would have been a lot easier in school. The way they taught it is some bullshyt. I never got a good grasp on math and I suck at it today.
