I haven't built a rig since 2004
Hmm, I think building one is probably going to be your best bet. It will all boil down to how small you want it.

I just don't feel right recommending something at $600+ with an i3 processor and 860M. I will have to troll around eBay/Newegg to see what is available

Had to take apart the entire mini-itx build and re-seat the processor. what a pain in the ass. Prime 95 went from 80c under full load down to 65c max. let me tell you a Fractal Design Node looks cute but there's nowhere to put the cables so its a rats nest in there. Hopefully in the summer I don't get random shutdowns like I got with my gaming PC when it was in the Cooler Master Elite 130.

I don't think Rekka is about that building life.

An alienware alpha seems like the ideal solution for him.
You're probably better off using a custom builder if you don't want to put the parts together yourself. An Alienware Alpha is a turd. Cost way too much to be stuck with the graphics card in there and its a custom card so the standard Nvidia drivers don't work on it. Dragon Age came out and people were upset about drivers.

What kind of gaming and what resolution/performance?

1080p and 60fps with maxed (Ultra) settings is what I would aim for...

The CPU and GPU alone for that kind of performance will cost you $500-$600...
A GTX 970 should be able to do that at $300-$350 depending on where you get it.

wait, do you want prefab or are you building this yourself? That changes things

Whatever is cheapest.....I can figure shyt out if I need to put together again. It's been a long while, but it's gotta be easier nowadays.

I used to fukk with pricewatch heavy.

And you don't even have to build it. If you up your budget you can put a better gpu in the $700 one. What kinda graphics are you looking for?

If you put the nvidia 960 in it it's $776

edit: you can play around with the configurations and get a better harddrive or ssd if you don't mind less space.

It might be your best bet
