Man I'm really wilding out.. I never paid attention to my GPU temps and I had a hunch that something was off. One of the fans on my R9 280X seems to be malfunctioning as it spins slower than the other fan on the card. I noticed my temps was at 89c meanwhile my older card never reached those temps.

Edit:Yup i just google'd around and it seems to be a prevalent issue among the MSI 280X cards.

When i went to check my card the fan on the right side of the card wasn't even spinning.

Looked like this.

It was random. The computer could be coming up off a cold boot and it would be 100% idle. Didn't matter if nothing was running.
Oh, it might be a different issue with me. Mine isn't random, it's only when I actually use the hdd. I'll need to do more tests. Maybe it should be at 100% when downloading steam games. I dunno...

Good thing you're less than 30 days into that card. Should be a hassle free return

I'm worried this may be a MSI issue because I see a lot of posts online about this issue for this particular card. When I went to the store to buy it, they were all marked as clearance. There's nothing else but these cards in the same price range. :snoop:

I'm reading I need to apply oil on the fan bearing on this card to fix it probably.

:wow: @Orbital-Fetus really was on to something......

what's next?? Cover the card with rice and use water cooling?

Was it 100% random or was it when doing stuff with the hdd?

@daze23 what was your issue?
it seemed to be 'random' sometimes, but it also would happen when I would try to access something on the drive. I also had my page file on that drive, so that could have something to do with it. seeing as my issue turned out to be the SATA cable, I imagine it was trying to communicate with the drive, not getting a response, and then 'hanging' as it waited. this would effect me during normal use, shut down, and boot. the problem also seemed to get worse and more consistent over a few days (at first it only happened a few times, but eventually it became pretty much impossible to use my system)

I don't think it's out of the ordinary for an HDD/SDD to spike to 100% during normal use. mine would be 'stuck' at 100%, often for no particular reason, and the whole computer would usually be somewhat/completely unresponsive

reminds me, I have to log onto newegg and give that cable a bad review :pacspit:

Just came back from Microcenter and just did a lite upgrade. I returned my MSI Radeon 3GB R9 280X back and exchanged it for a R9 270X since it was cheaper and anything more powerful than that would be marginal since my CPU was bottlenecking it. The 270X being a rebranded 7870 worked out for me since that card was pretty damn good in the first place.
The card I returned was $230 so I got the 270x for $189 and I threw in a FX 6300 to it with a 2 year warranty. Walked out only paying $60 difference for all of that and my new GPU still has the 2 year warranty from the one I returned on it so I'm good :win:.

I just popped it in, overclocked the CPU to 4.3GHZ on a CM Hyper 212+ and OC'd the GPU a lil. Gonna go test out Watch Dogs now.. :sadcam:
