It was random. The computer could be coming up off a cold boot and it would be 100% idle. Didn't matter if nothing was running.

Oh, it might be a different issue with me. Mine isn't random, it's only when I actually use the hdd. I'll need to do more tests. Maybe it should be at 100% when downloading steam games. Man I'm really wilding out.. I never paid attention to my GPU temps and I had a hunch that something was off. One of the fans on my R9 280X seems to be malfunctioning as it spins slower than the other fan on the card. I noticed my temps was at 89c meanwhile my older card never reached those temps.
Edit:Yup i just google'd around and it seems to be a prevalent issue among the MSI 280X cards.
When i went to check my card the fan on the right side of the card wasn't even spinning.
Looked like this.
I'm worried this may be a MSI issue because I see a lot of posts online about this issue for this particular card. When I went to the store to buy it, they were all marked as clearance. There's nothing else but these cards in the same price range.
Good thing you're less than 30 days into that card. Should be a hassle free return

Great smilie
And a good neg too
it seemed to be 'random' sometimes, but it also would happen when I would try to access something on the drive. I also had my page file on that drive, so that could have something to do with it. seeing as my issue turned out to be the SATA cable, I imagine it was trying to communicate with the drive, not getting a response, and then 'hanging' as it waited. this would effect me during normal use, shut down, and boot. the problem also seemed to get worse and more consistent over a few days (at first it only happened a few times, but eventually it became pretty much impossible to use my system)
i broke my video card fan trying to fix it by lubing it with oil. hopefully i can switch this bullshyt tomorrow.
