'The Vampire Diaries' adds Jodi Lyn O'Keefe

By Samantha Highfill on Jul 17, 2014 at 4:18PM

Jodi-Lyn-OKeefe.jpg

If there’s one thing that The Vampire Diaries desperately needs, it’s a good doctor (who isn’t a fan of torturing vampires). And considering we haven’t seen Meredith Fell in a while, season six is the perfect time to introduce a new medical expert.

EW has learned exclusively that Hit the Floor‘s Jodi Lyn O’Keefe has been cast as new character Jo, “a tough and accomplished doctor at the university hospital. She demands excellence from her students and has learned the hard way that there’s no room for error in her profession.”

O’Keefe’s casting follows the announcement that Colin Ferguson is joining the show as Tripp, the head of a community militia desperate to protect his town. So perhaps some of Tripp’s victims will be paying Jo a visit? We’ll find out soon enough, with O’Keefe first appearing in the season six premiere. There’s no word yet on how long she’ll stick around.

Chris Wood

Chris Wood is trading in one diary for another.

The Carrie Diaries star has landed a recurring role on the upcoming season ofThe Vampire Diaries, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Wood, whose credits also include Girls and Major Crimes, will play Kai, a charmingly unstable newcomer with the unsettling ability to seem normal as the situation demands. He can be both playful and obsessive with a mix of adolescent angst. Sounds like he'll fit right in!

Wood joins the previously cast Colin Ferguson, Marco James, Emily C. Chang, Gabrielle Walsh and Jodi Lyn O'Keefe. The actor will first appear in Episode 3 of the new season, which will premiere Thursday, Oct. 2 at 8/7c on The CW.

(Full disclosure: TVGuide.com is owned by CBS, one of The CW's parent companies.)

The Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec: Elena Has Lost the Man She Thought She'd Spend Eternity With

Jul 18, 2014 10:40 AM ET by Robyn Ross

140718vampire-diaries3_300x206.jpg

The Vampire Diaries

Vampire Diaries fans have seen Elena Gilbert grieve, but when Season 6 premieres, she'll have seemingly moved on from losing the love of her life, Damon.

"One of the big questions you'll be asking when we get back is how did she pick up the pieces?" executive producer Julie Plec told TVGuide.com. "Or did she pick up the pieces at all? When we come back, several months have passed and Elena has returned to her life at school and seems to be doing well, but the mystery is really how well is she doing? And she's got some odd and awkward coping mechanisms that inform a lot about where she is and how she's handling this particular grief."

But Elena (Nina Dobrev) isn't the only one reeling from Season 5's finale that left Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) trapped on the Other Side as it was about to disintegrate. Stefan (Paul Wesley) lost his brother; Caroline (Candice Accola), a best friend; Tyler (Michael Trevino) lost his hybrid status; Alaric (Matt Davis) returned from the dead; and perhaps worst of all, Mystic Falls was stripped of magic. Where does the group go from here? As the show resumes filming in Atlanta, Plec spills some scoop.

How long will it be before we find out where Damon and Bonnie have been and presumably when they'll be back?
Julie Plec:
The answer of what happened is part of the season-long mythology, but the mystery of where they are is going to be asked very quickly and answered soon enough to not be frustrating.

Can Elena really move on?
Plec:
What happened to her is that in spite of losing her parents and her brother, her aunt, her friends again and again, she lost the person she singularly believed to be the man she was going to spend all of eternity with. I think there's a special form of grief that comes attached to that, which will be difficult to get past, but also the choices she makes at how to move on will be very interesting to watch.

Will she and Stefan lean on each other over their shared loss?
Plec:
Well, speaking of coping mechanisms, each of them have a very specific method of how they're dealing with it and they find a strange appreciation of each other's methods even though they're not necessarily healthy. They connect over the fact that sometimes it takes extreme choices to move past something that has hurt you so deeply. So we will see their friendship able to be strong and healthy in spite of the way each of them individually are dealing with their loss.

Last season began with the start of college. Will Elena and Caroline try to resume normalcy in being a couple of college kids?
Plec:
That's the goal. The problem is they didn't just lose their friends, they lost their town. They can't go home again, so college in its own way should be this haven for them where the friends can be together but not everyone wants it to be that easy and not everyone is that willing and ready to settle in and say, "OK, let's move on." So we'll be wanting to see our friends find a way back to each other and move past the trouble they brought upon themselves and get back to their home. And in the meantime, it's going to be what each of them is doing to make that happen.

How does Caroline handle everything?
Plec:
Caroline is probably someone who will surprise you. She's taken this loss -- in a weird way almost the hardest -- so she's going to have to bounce back in her Caroline way. Who she bounces back with and how she does it and how she's living her life is revealed in the first episode. Her journey is where are all her friends and if only she could figure out a way to bring them all back together, get the magic back to Mystic Falls, find a way to bring Damon and Bonnie home than life would be perfect. But it's harder than she thought.

With Alaric back, how does he fit in or is it hard for him to find his place?
Plec:
Alaric is struggling a little bit. He was turned into a breed of original vampire and then set on a killing mission and then he died, so after being a weird vampire and a ghost for all this time he's assimilating into his life as this creature he never wanted to be. But he's still trying to be the human that he was and it's not easy for him. There might be some help and assistance that comes in the form of a woman he'll meet, and he and Elena are closer than ever, which is great because she has somebody in her life she can really rely on and they can share their grief together.

This week, you cast a bunch of new characters. Who are you most excited about?
Plec:
I'm particularly fond of the Kai character, played by Chris Wood, and Jo, played by Jodi Lyn O'Keefe. I've been a fan of Jody Lyn sinceH20 back in the day. Chris Wood is this exciting new guy, not new to everyone, but new to me, and he bowled me over. The characters are so powerful, each of them, and I'm really excited to see what we can do with them.

Vampire Diaries Season 6: Elena's Grief, Stefan's 'Big Choices' and More Scoop
By Andy Swift / July 18 2014, 8:00 AM PDT

vampire-diaries-season-6.jpg

With just under 11 weeks to go until the return of The Vampire Diaries, TVLine caught up with executive producer Julie Plec to see how Elena and the Salvatores are coping with that massive season finale twist.

According to Plec, Season 6 — beginning with the Oct. 2 premiere, which we’re told is titled “I’ll Remember” — will be a trying time for all of our favorite characters, particularly those left behind to mourn the apparent losses of Damon and Bonnie. (Spoiler alert: Don’t expect any otherworldly reunions in Episode 1.)

Let’s begin…

TVLINE | I have to ask: Is there a chance Damon and Bonnie will like where they are? Is it almost heaven-like?
Ooh, well… I can tell you this: Where they are is part of the mystery of the beginning of the season. It’s not torturous, but it’s by no means a roller coaster ride of fun. If nothing else, it’s a bit of an existential experience. [Laughs]

vampire-diaries-season-6-spoilers-bonniedamon.jpg

TVLINE | How aware of their new surroundings will they be?
They’ll be aware that they’re no longer where they thought they were — but they’re also not dead, per se. They’ll be asking a lot of questions, along with the audience, including: What’s going on? Where the hell are we? And how do we get home?

TVLINE | There’s a crazy internet rumor out there that suggests Elena will want to reunite with Damon so badly, she’ll consider dying to join him. Is there any truth to that?
I’ll just say that I think it’d be super sad for a young woman in her vibrant, early years to take her life and die on the sword for the love of a man. As much as I am a romantic and believe in true love, I also believe in therapy and trying to pull yourself together and getting on with your life.

TVLINE | Is she pulling herself together? What canyou say about Elena’s mental state in Season 6?
She’s trying, and I won’t necessarily say she’s succeeding. She’s got some complicated coping mechanisms that are making her be things and do things and act in ways that we wouldn’t normally expect from her.

vampire-diaries-season-5-spoilers.jpg

TVLINE | And how is Stefan coping with the apparent loss of his brother?
Stefan has made some very big choices about how he wants to live his life in the wake of his brother’s death. That’s part of the first round of reveals of where our characters are. Is he off on the top of a mountain talking to a shaman? Is he trying to get answers from a witch about how to fix everything? Is he back to being a ripper? Is he drowning his sorrows at the bottom of a bottle? We’ll see…

The Vampire Diaries: Elena related scoop on season 6 from TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich

elena-gilbert-gallery.jpg

Here's some scoop on The Vampire Diaries from this week's (Posted on 7/18/14) Matt's Inside Line column.

What coping mechanisms will Elena from The Vampire Diaries be using to deal with the fact she lost Damon (seemingly) forever? –Ana
It sounds like she’ll be burying her nose in the books, of the medical stripe. As indicated by a flurry of recent castings – and likely a pure coincidence now thatTVD has Grey’s Anatomy as a time slot rival — “When we come back, we’ll see that Elena is actively pursuing a degree in pre-med,” show boss Julie Plec told us. “She’s a smart girl, and Elena’s father was a doctor, so she’s trying to figure out how to help people and save people, just as her family did.” And merely as an added bonus, “We’ll meet some hot young pre-med guys and sexy doctors” as she does so.

Originals' Michael Narducci: Klaus Will be Vindictive and Dangerous - But Now with Purpose

Jul 21, 2014 03:09 PM ET by Robyn Ross

140721joseph-morgan-originals1_300x206.jpg

Joseph Morgan

On Season 2 of The Originals, Klaus and Hayley are on a mission — and you better not stand in their way.

During the Season 1 finale, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) gave birth and was immediately killed, only to wake up as a hybrid. But with the baby's life at stake, Hayley, along with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies), made the heartbreaking decision to give baby Hope to the only person they could trust with keeping her safe: Rebekah (Claire ****). But for both parents, the devastating loss will be their drive and purpose when the show returns.

"Everyone has a different reaction to tragedy. Some people look to replace it with another love, some people focus on self-improvement, but Klaus has decided that he will only imagine a day when he'll be reunited with [Hope] while he destroys everyone keeping that child away from him," executive producer Michael Narducci tells TVGuide.com. "So he will make everyone [pay] and that's a very Klaus-ian response. Some people said, 'Oh, Klaus is so sensitive and emotional this season' and I like that stuff, but I feel like Joseph is so good at playing vindictive and dangerous and now he gets to be that with purpose."

Hayley, meanwhile, was just coming into her own as a strong woman during the first season, but will essentially be broken upon the return. "In the early episodes, you will see her shattered," Narducci says. "There's postpartum depression and then there's postpartum depression when you've given up the baby, died and were reborn as a hybrid and you don't know what it's all about."

She too will be laser focused on revenge, but like last year, Hayley will find herself once again without family. "The thing that defined Hayley in Season 1, besides interaction with the Original family, was her desire to find her family," he says. "She found her family and right at the moment when she connected with them and saw she had a purpose and a legacy to be a part of this werewolf pack, she's now completely severed from that connection to the point that those werewolves look at her as just another vampire. So what will her reaction be? [She'll] pull herself up from the depths of a very low place and find a purpose which is similar in some ways to what Klaus wants ... to make her enemies suffer. But she also has another agenda, which is really cool."

The Originals returns on its new night, Monday, Oct. 6 at 8/7c.

The Originals Season 2: EPs Talk Klaus' Crisis, Haylijah's 'Friction' and More
By Andy Swift / July 21 2014, 12:35 PM PDT

the-originals-season-2.jpg

With exactly 11 weeks until the second season premiere of The Originals, TVLine caught up with executive producers Julie Plec and Michael Narducci for the scoop on what the Big Easy has in store for our (anti)heroes.

In addition to being the title of the premiere, the EPs told us “Rebirth” will be a running theme of the CW drama’s sophomore season. Part of that will come from Klaus and Elijah confronting their parents — and, spoiler alert, Narducci told us “it’s not going to be a huge amount of time” before they figure out Mikael and Esther are back with a vengeance.

Ready, set, spoil!

HAYLIJAH | Unfortunately, it sounds like Hayley and Elijah’s relationship will be taking a step back in Season 2. “[Hayley] and Klaus are the only two hybrids in existence now, so Elijah will inevitably wonder, ‘Is there a connection between my brother and Hayley that I could never surpass?’” Narducci explained. “There’s going to be some interesting friction. Ultimately, Elijah is going to have to decide, ‘Do I want to help this girl?’”

KLAUS: THE EARLY YEARS | Season 2, Narducci explained, is “all about confronting the sins of the past. We’re very much defined by our parents, but as we become adults, we begin to choose our own paths. … Klaus is very much a product of his abusive father, and very much a product of his mother.” In going deeper into Klaus’ moral origins, we’ll see “flashbacks to when he was a child,” as well as “right before he became a vampire.” All of this will “examine what his relationship was with his mother, and the sense of betrayal that he felt when she came back from the dead and judged him as an abomination.”

davina-season-2.jpg

A WITCH’S CONFLICT | Davina’s agenda, Narducci explained, is going to unfold in an interesting way this fall: “She has Mikael under her control, and she wants Klaus to suffer — but she also loves Josh and Marcel, and she knows they’re connected to Klaus. She’s going to have to be smart about what she ultimately decides to do with Mikael.” As for which of Klaus and Elijah’s brothers Esther brought back with her, the EPs are remaining tight-lipped for now.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? | The explanation behind the season premiere’s title, “Rebirth,” is two-fold, according to Plec. Not only is it indicative of the episode’s theme — the loss of Klaus’ baby, the start of his new life, etc. — but it also has a special meaning for the show, itself. “Every title we use, we try to make it a song title from New Orleans or an artist from New Orleans,” Plec said. “Rebirth is one of the best brass bands in New Orleans, and they were in our pilot. We’ve been waiting to use that title for 22 episodes.”

The Originals‘second season premieres Oct. 6 at 8/7c on The CW.

The Originals: Scoop on the future of Haley and Elijah's relationship in season 2 from E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos

Taylor: Give me some scoop on my favorite couple on TV: Hayley and Elijah on The Originals!
Come on, is there really time for romance in NoLA?! "Elijah should be nervous about a lot of things. Elijah is going to go through some s--t this year at the beginning of the season," Julie Plec told us. "It's not going to be all puppy dogs and rainbows for him at all." And one thing he'll definitely have to worry about? Hayley "reconnecting" with Jackson, as Nathan Parsons "will make his return about six episodes in."

The Originals: Esther and Finn related scoop on season 2 from TVGuide's Natalie Abrams

Here's some scoop on The Originals from TVGuide's Natalie Abrams' Mega Buzz column, which was posted on 7/22/14.

How long before Klaus finds out about Esther and Finn when The Originals returns? — Harriet
"Do we know that it's Finn?" executive producer Michael Narducci muses when my colleague Robyn Ross asked him the same thing. Regardless, Esther and whoever was with her will make their names known soon. "If you think about the kind of stories that Julie Plec tells ... based on that you have a sense of how quickly we'll play it out, who's returned, what their agenda is and we'll start to see some pretty intense complications before too long."

The Vampire Diaries: Matt and Tyler related scoop on season 6 from TVGuide's Natalie Abrams

Here's some scoop on The Vampire Diaries from TVGuide's Natalie Abrams' Mega Buzz column, which was posted on 7/22/14.

Loved all the Damon-Elena scoop, but what about my boys Matt and Tyler on The Vampire Diaries?
Our favorite quarterback is doing just fine. "He misses his friends, but he's dealing with his grief in his own way [and] he's channeling it into something very positive by getting involved in the community and really trying to make something of himself," executive producer Julie Plec says. "So he's thriving, ironically, in the absence of the supernatural elements in Mystic Falls." As for Tyler, Plec adds, "Tyler is back to being a guy with a werewolf curse. He's been down this road, and it's really difficult [and] he's got testosterone and machismo, so how does he keep himself together? He'll find help in some fun sources."
