Rules-ish stuff
Things to consider when approaching the finish to Michigan's 2016 (or any other class):
1. Anything can change on any given day on any given recruitment.
2. At the end of the day, winning football is the most effective recruiter.
3.
Jim Harbaugh recruits a lot of players without a position in mind. There is little use for projecting certain guys (Viramontes, etc.) at this point.
4. NOBODY knows how many players Michigan will sign in 2016, and NOBODY knows exactly how they will get there right now.
5. Decommitments, greyshirts, non-qualifiers and the "mutually parting ways" are the four major ways the class could change. This is a general rule, not Michigan-specific.
6. This staff is evaluating the senior class heavily still, meaning some names not listed in this piece may pop up in the near or later future.
7. This staff looks to be content in letting commitments take official visits elsewhere after a verbal commitment.
8. Not one commitment has sent Michigan their financial aid papers to enroll early and it's unclear who the full group is right now (
Brandon Peters is one that will).
9. Check Rule 1 again.
Overview
Michigan's class is currently at twenty commitments by our books (
Dele Harding has not publicly decommitted from the staff, but we've removed him from our commitment list for the sake of accuracy in this piece). The breakdown by position is as follows:
QB: 1 (
Brandon Peters)
RB: 1 (
Kingston Davis)
WR: 1 (
Ahmir Mitchell)
TE: 1 (
Sean McKeon)
OG: 2 (
Ben Bredeson,
Michael Onwenu)
OT: 2 (
Devery Hamilton,
Erik Swenson)
LB: 2 (
David Reese,
Dytarious Johnson)
CB: 2: (
Antwaine Richardson, Sir Patrick Scott)
ATH: Because we currently view eight current commitments as "athletes", they get their own category. The positions are listed in slash order of where we'd project them
as of today.
Brad Hawkins (WR/DB)
Ron Johnson (DE/LB)
Rashad Weaver (DE/DT/TE)
Victor Viramontes (LB/H-Back TE/Safety)
Devin Gil (LB/S)
Josh Metellus (S/CB/LB)
Kiante Enis (RB/S)
Chris Evans (no clue on order, but either WR, RB or CB)
Needs/Targets
Needs
As is always the case, the needs number at a certain position are almost 100% projections until the class is nearly at full capacity (wanting one more tackle after 4 OL commits is a good example). These are what we currently see as the biggest needs remaining for the Wolverines in this class (in order and not in full):
Linebacker: Michigan graduates three seniors and have little experience outside of
Ben Gedeon returning next year. This is one spot where Michigan pitch early playing time to elite talents.
Defensive line: I kept defensive line as one because a lot of the targets remaining on Michigan's board are versatile players that could play both (
Rashan Gary,
Keyshon Camp, etc.) in the middle and on the edge. With
Reuben Jones and
Lawrence Marshall looking like BUCK types, it means the Wolverines have only recruited one pure defensive end in the last two cycles in
Shelton Johnson. They don't really lose anybody next season, but lose a TON of players the year after that. They need to start replenishing now.
Wide receiver: The Wolverines don't graduate any key players at the position heading into next season, but are looking to find speed across the board at wide receiver, something they lack to an extent on the current roster.
Running back: Michigan will be thin at running back starting in 2017, especially after the
Karan Higdon redshirt was burned. They'll hope to reel in a difference maker in either the 2016 or 2017 class.
Safety: Michigan took one pure safety in the 2015 class with
Tyree Kinnel, and who knows how long
Jabrill Peppers is going to be around, so solidifying the back end with
Delano Hill and
Dymonte Thomas not being redshirted will be important.
Tackle: Michigan really wants one more tackle in this class with
Jean Delance being the top target on their board in that regard. Tackle on both sides of the ball will likely be the top priority in 2017.
Targets/Recruiting board
QB:
Michigan already has
Brandon Peters in the fold, and are done at quarterback in 2016.
Dylan McCaffrey remains the top target in 2017.
RB:
With Matt Falcon moving on, Michigan is down to
Kingston Davis in the class, with Davis looking to take official visits to Nebraska, LSU and Florida. Ohio State commitment
Kareem Walker is the obvious main target for the staff going forward, and while Walker continues to reiterate his commitment to the Buckeyes, nobody is fully convinced that it's the case.
Miami (FL) commitment
Travis Homer seems content to wait out the Canes' next hire, and Michigan has also put some feelers out to Florida commitment
Lamical Perine as well, although it's unclear where he lies. More than any other position, this is where we will likely see some new names pop up, regardless of how the staff feels about Walker.
WR:
Michigan's wide receiver board is full at this point, but the targets they're eyeing haven't jumped on board yet. The dream finish would be a mix of the only real four targets they're pursuing (right now) in
Dylan Crawford,
Donnie Corley,
Keyshawn Young and
Eddie McDoom.
I have Crystal Ball predictions on the Wolverines for both Crawford and Young, and depending on whether three ends up being the number, it wouldn't be a surprise if McDoom was in the class also. We still have Corley committing to Michigan State on December 8th, but Notre Dame may be a team to watch and we aren't fully counting Michigan out yet either. He is a take no matter what. Paramus (NJ) Catholic's Donald Stewart is a name to watch also. He's scheduled to officially visit for Ohio State, but is seeing interest from Auburn and may go to the Iron Bowl instead.
TE:
Sean McKeon is a high-ceiling but raw prospect committed to the staff. The Wolverines would like to pair him with more of a sure thing. The obvious candidate remains five-star
Isaac Nauta, who will be a good player wherever he goes, but could be great in Harbaugh's heavy sets.
Other potential targets for the Wolverines are
Jacob Mathis,
Cary Angeline (USC commit) and three-star
Darel Middleton. The latter two do not currently hold Michigan offers.
This is another spot we could see some names pop up late, and it's a spot the coaching staff is continuing to evaluate in order to avoid putting all of their eggs in only elite baskets.
OL:
Michigan is almost 100% certain to take only one more offensive lineman. Right now, the question is whether or not that will be
Terrance Davis or
Jean Delance. Florida has surged recently for Davis, but our intel still suggests that the Wolverines are in the driver's seat as both he and his mom love the coaching staff.
Delance appears to be a Michigan/Texas battle, with the Longhorns holding the
current edge as he hasn't even gotten the chance to see Michigan's campus at this point. His official visit will be one of the most important remaining for the Wolverines.
Jim Harbaugh recently reached out to another Texas product in
Kellen Diesch, but we don't see that one going anywhere at this point. Michigan is also expecting USC commitment Frank Martin II to officially visit as well.
DL:
The defensive side of things is where it gets really complicated. On the defensive line, there remain a lot of strong possibilities for the Wolverines. I have my 247Sports Crystal Ball on the Wolverines for the #1 overall prospect in the country in
Rashan Gary. It'd almost certainly be Michigan if he chose today, but he's not choosing today. Auburn, Alabama, USC, Notre Dame, LSU, Ole Miss, Clemson and others are going to fight for his final official visits, and it's a long ways until National Signing Day.
Michigan is also the public leader for Top50 overall defensive tackle
Jordan Elliott. While his recruitment has been relatively wild at this point, there's reason for optimism if the Wolverines are a reiterated leader without having ever stepped foot on campus. He will officially visit for the Ohio State game as well, with Texas being the main competition for him as well.
Other legitimate options for Michigan on the defensive line are Lakeland (FL) Lake Gibson four-star
Keyshon Camp and Phoenix (AZ) Brophy Prep four-star
Connor Murphy. Camp took his official earlier this season and Murphy will, but doesn't know when yet. They're still in the thick of the race for Euless (TX) Trinity four-star
Chris Daniels and we see them as factors for three-star
Levi Onwuzurike and North Carolina commit
Tomon Fox as well, although Fox could project to BUCK.
