BBC News - UN to vote on Palestinian enhanced status

Palestinians say the bid, which would give it the same "non-member state" status as the Vatican, is an attempt to rescue the Middle East peace process.

Analysts say the application is likely to win approval in the 193-member body when it is put to a vote, because it needs only a simple majority to pass.

The bid is strongly opposed by Israel and the US. The UK may abstain.

Supporting Palestine at the UN today is a vote for peace in the Middle East | Hanan Ashrawi | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

Countries that do not vote with Palestine will be on the wrong side of history, morality and international law

We are resolute in our decision to apply for observer-state status. Now is the time for the international community to act on its words and help us bring an end to the occupation. For those countries, like the UK, that are still wavering, it must be stressed that if they choose not to vote with Palestine they will find themselves on the wrong side of history, let alone morality, justice and international law. Israel is deliberately destroying the two-state solution, as well as the chances for peace and security in the region and beyond. It is high time that all those countries that recognise the urgency of the moment become fully engaged in ending the cruel and illegal occupation and enabling the Palestinians to exercise their right to self-determination and sovereignty and to live in freedom and dignity on their own land.

break this down for a nikka

if this passes, what happens?

not much to be honest :obama: but it increases palestine's rights as a state that can join some other international bodies etc

basically the US and Israel were being super upset about this and threatening consequences the Palestinians were like "this is our right bro" and it turns out the US isn't really going to do anything about it

to break it down super simply the US/Israel says Palestine should negotiate with Israel directly but Palestine says Israel just uses negotiation as a delay tactic while making peace less possible

They can join Committees and bring up crimes Against humanity/war crimes on Israel

That's what people in this thread don't understand. This is huge

Its true. But this is Israel we are talking about, they can have resolutions, figureheads be put on the ICC, and they'll still do what they do. International law doesn't mean a damn thing.

doesn't this mean the flip also? You think they'll try to tie terrorist organizations to the "state of Palestine" and say they were/are responsible for war crimes as well?

As no declaration of war has been issued isn't attempting to shoot a mortar at a civilian population sorta...bad?
