That’s because Kirby didn't write those issues, Don McGregor did. McGregor did speak out that writing that story got in the way of his career.

Should I start suicide squad w/ this latest volume? Or do y'all recommend the first and work my way up?
The OG Suicide Squad by Ostrander/Yale is one of the best series in the history of comics so it's worth starting there.
If you are talking about more recent stuff I would just go with the current book by Tom Taylor. It's the best version of the Squad since The New 52 first happened.

I don’t even bother to read JL Odyssey anymore. 
I plan on buying the issues when they’re in cheap boxes, So I’ll just hold off on actually reading the last few issues. (I hope it ends soon.) Until then, I’ll just look at the art and read a panel or 2.
