One thing I'll say about Blumhouse though is that I do admire their efforts in bankrolling low to mid budget horror that would otherwise not get theatrical treatment, for better or for worse. I may not fukk with their recent entries but if they're serving as a gateway to the horror genre for other folks then that's dope. Like, M3GAN wasn't my thing at all, but it did hit big with the general audience. So much that the media was basing SNL skits off of it.

As long as the director/crew of that last PoS ’movie’ has absolutely NOTHING to do with it, I think people would be open. That was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I don’t even consider it as part of canon the Halloween movies. Moustapha Akkad must be spinning

Forgot about Imaginary. Trailer looked pretty good. Is it that bad?? I f with Blumhouse, though was surprised they stole the idea for Malignant as someone posted earlier in this thread.
Yeah, that last Halloween trilogy will sapped my enthusiasm. Akkad really loved the franchise, it comes across clear as day in the Taking Shape books. I feel like turning the legacy slashers into series is an interesting idea. It could work really well since there's so much history to pull from, and a bunch of spec scripts with cool ideas that never made it to big screen. But I'll be skeptical until they pull one off.

Yeah, that original mission for Blumhouse was great. They had so many gems, and still give us the occasional quality. It just slipped up and fell into some formulaic patterns. It's good to have a studio with recognition that can give horror directors opportunities. I just hope they don't keep reserving so much budget for Wan, Wannell, and David Gordon Green. There are some really good auteurs that I'd like to see get bigger shots...namely Demian Rugna.

VHS > Amateur Night > Siren movie

VHS 2 > Slumber Party > Kids vs Aliens movie

My theory is that the tapes in the VHS universe were leaked, and Hollywood made a movie in the universe based off two of those leaked tapes considering that the movies aren't found footage style.

For sure. Plenty of other promising directors to showcase their talent. Guys like Wan and Whannell, who I like, are safe, proven options that I already know what I'm gonna get under the Blumhouse umbrella. It wouldn't shock me if NEON ends up snatching Rugna though, them boys over there seem to be assembling the New Avengers of horror directors.

Also, is Flanagan just not interested in making horror films anymore? He used to put out movies for Blumhouse and its been crickets for years. I love the stuff he does for Netflix but I'm itchin' to catch his work on the big screen again.

Derek Cianfrance leaving the upcoming Wolf Man project still stings. He's never directed a horror film before, as bleak as his other projects are. He was tapped at one point along with Gosling, but I'm assuming strike schedule conflicts prevented such from happening. Whannell is cool, and I actually think Abbott is a better choice than Gosling, but I don't think this sting will ever subside. Leigh could end up crushing the buildings and I'd still be thinking of the what-if.

I ended up watching Fulci’s ‘The New York Ripper’ the other night and lawd, it’s such a grimy giallo. Some of the filthiest kills for a killer whose over-the-phone shtick is to sound like a C-rate Donald Duck. I was actually impressed by how mean-spirited and politically incorrect in nature the film was, as it would no doubt get blasted if made today.

But one of the many things I like about films from the 70s and 80s films is how dirty they portray NYC. Not really sugar-coated with that gloss like I see in the majority of media today. Wish more contemporary films of this era would embrace the sketchiness more (Uncut Gems did it). If the rumors are true of MaXXXine taking inspiration from this, then that only makes me even more stoked to go catch it come July.

Favorite part of the 1st TMNT movie that was released by New Line Cinema, the indi film company that Freddy Krueger built.

If you know anymore gritty old school NYC Films let me know.

I watched a few horror movies since the last time I posted in here.

May - Not too much a horror, but its good as one of those starts as one thing and becomes something else. I thought it was funny and Angela Bettis is an underrated actress.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - I forgot David Arquette was in this movie. Peewee Herman's death is hilarious in this. SMG is definitely my favorite Buffy but Kristy Swanson wasn't bad.

The Reaping - I like religious horror. Some parts worked, some didn't. Overall I enjoyed the movie. IDK why but Hilary Swank looked good in the movie, I didn't know she had ass like that. Idris Elba is in the movie and I didn't know that until he showed up. Unfortunately he doesn't have much to do and dies in the dumbest way:snoop:

Possessor - Rewatched this with a friend he wanted something gory and we both had a good time. I haven't rewatched Infinity Pool but I like this the most so far.

The Fly 86 - I forgot who named best horror remakes in here recently, but this has to be included among the top of the list. This was my second time watching this movie and I enjoyed it way more. JGB is great in it, so is Geena Davis. I think this is a great tragic love story.

Double Blind - I was kinda half paying attention but I liked what I saw and might go back. NoES is my favorite horror series and they stopped making those so I'm a sucker for any horror movie with dream sequences.

Mea Culpa - Not horror, not good. I was hoping for a Basic Instinct movie. I did like one scene. The twist was dumb and I didn't like the way they set it up at the end.

Jacob's Ladder - First time watching this and :why:. I'm going to need to rewatch this but it was great.I look up a lot of best 90s horror lists and IDK why this isn't listed. Ending was deep to me.

From Dusk Til Dawn - Fantastic movie. The reason why I think this movie works so well is that Seth Gecko and the Fuller family are played straight, they aren't wacky characters. WIth all the crazy stuff going on they act like real people in a fukked up situation.

Planet Terror - I rewatched this again because it was on television and I just watched FDTD. I prefer FDTD and some of the editing choices make me dislike this movie each time I watch it. Rose McGowan makes this movie entertaining for me. I watched Grindhouse in theaters and this was my favorite segment. I like Death proof more now.

Death Proof - I watched this last year I think idk why I sat there and watched them when they came on TV. After watching The Thing(I watched Escape from New York and Big Trouble in Little China last year too) seeing Kurt Russell play one of the most popular male heroes in horror, seeing him play a villian about 30 years later was fun. I can tell he had fun in this film. Its kind of weird that theres 2 groups of female victims in a horror movie and you spend as much time with ones that die as the ones that live. I'm not sure yet if I hate this or love this. It's different which is probably good because a lot of horror follow "a set of rules".

Sidenote: Vanessa Ferlito gotta be the finest ugly broad. Half the time I was like, "Her?" and the other half I was like :shaq:

Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor - I'm not big on found footage or clowns that are meant to be scary. Maybe it was the Margot character that I hated in this movie.

Fear 2023 - I should have known this movie was going to be ass. It has Tommy from Power, Clifford "T.I." Harris, King Bach, and Terrence J from 106 & Park. The characters do a lot of dumb things. Like they want to quarantine TI in the basement but he was in a room by himself. Why move him and get sick when he was already alone:beli: At least the women were fine:pachaha: Man fukk spoilers for this. They defeat the creature by reciting bible verses that the final girl remembered by being a christian:dead: I know I said I like religious horror but I don't ever remember this being a plot point and the evil was never biblical.

The long list of horror what-if combinations with franchise and director. The one that always comes up is Quentin Tarantino doing Halloween (if memory serves, it was Halloween 3D that he was aligned with). But the one that I REALLY wish went down is George Romero's Resident Evil. He even watched an assistant play through the first game and directed a cinematic commercial for RE2 (only aired in Japan). I'd like to think that Romero's work on an RE treatment is what got him back into zombies enough to make his second zombie trilogy.

I'd also love to see what Carpenter's take on the Exorcist 3 would have been.

May and Death Proof are two movies that I think get carried by a charismatic performance. Angela Bettis BODIED her role in May. It'd be a slow, maybe even boring movie, if not for her being so strange but likeable. Death Proof, I think Kurt Russell chews up every scene he's in. Whether he's telling weird stories or driving like a lunatic. I really like both movies.

Possessor is one that I think is MUCH better on second-watch. I liked it the first time, and kinda loved it the second time. I have a feeling Infinity Pool is the same, but haven't given it a deeper look.

I'm big on Found Footage, and I really liked the original Hell House trilogy. So Carmichael Manor was right up my alley. I like that they figured out a way to pull away from the original house from the trilogy. I think the carnival grounds is a golden location to make another sequel.

the tenant (2010)
popped up on plex and we gave it a spin

aiiiight slasher
low budget shows in some scenes
decent story
serviciable acting
filmed in the dark to cover up fx budget

if you need some horror background noise, this fits the bill
