I liked Smile. The theme was pretty interesting and it was used pretty well to deliver dread and general uneasiness throughout the movie. The cinematography was excellent. They honestly shot the hell out of it and in that regards it’s better than Barbarian. I feel like Barbarian is the better MOVIE but in terms of scare factor Smile is better. Some of the acting is pretty uneven imo though. Jessie T. Usher is not good actor outside of The Boys and there’s another supporting character that’s kind of meh too. There’s a lot of jump scares but the ones that are meant to scare you get you. I’d give it 8/10…

Smile was really dope and a lot better than what I expected it to be. There’s such an overwhelming sense of dread and the journey felt akin to It Follows. Dolby sound obviously helped but the sound design for this was amazing. I can’t count the amount of times I fell for the jumpscares, even the simple things like
opening a can of cat food got to me. :damn:

They gave my boy A-Train the whitest sounding name. :mjlol:

Brehs, this has been a phenomenal year for the genre. Each theatrical film one ups the predecessor in its own unique ways to where you can make a serious case of it being the #1 horror movie of the year. What we got next?

The final creature design one upped Barbarian’s, IMO. That shyt is what nightmares is made of. I can’t get it out of my head, it looked like the BFG version of Steve Taylor.

The fire alarm and audio byte jumpscare scared the shyt out of me. :damn:

I felt like it was similar to It Follows too. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one. Movie was pretty good if Hellriser pulls through 2022 might be a good year for the genre.

You ain’t lying bout them jumpscares. :picard:

You ever felt that first drop of water outside when you realized it’s about to pour down raining? That’s how I felt here. Except I was in a theater, and instead of a raindrop it was somebody’s soda. That’s how intense these jumpscares were. :dead:

It's that time of year ladies and gentleman :demonic:

I was supposed to see Barbarian and Smile this weekend but life got in the way:francis:

Instead tho I showed my friend Sleepaway camp for the first time and her reaction was priceless :mjlol:

She liked it so much we watched the sequel too which I had never seen but was surprisingly good as just a pure 80's slasher.

Next up we did some found footage movies and that's honestly never been my jam. I couldn't tell you what happened in Paranormal Activity even tho I've seen it. I started with the classic Blair Witch tho cause I've always kind of fell asleep on it. It was cool and after that I watched the 2016 Blair Witch which acted as a sort of sequel. I thought it was alright for what it was. Jump scares galore but didn't bother me too much.

Next I watched As Above, So Below. This is one of the movies that proves horror movie ratings are bullshyt most of the time. This shyt was awesome. Kinda slow early on but about halfway through it gets really good and held my attention all the way through.

Next up was American Psycho. I've seen this movie a bunch of times but my friend hadn't so it was a nice little watch with her. This was like my 5th time watching it and I still picked up on things I missed before. I love stories with unreliable narrators. :banderas:

After that we watched the Chernobyl Diaries. I remember when this movie came out and seeing the trailers for it. Classic case of a good idea that was terribly done. The acting is so fukking terrible and the pacing is garbage. Once all the good shyt happens you're like halfway zoned out. Such a shame.

Alright next up on the list is House of 1000 Corpses. I haven't seen this movie in like 15 years so it's basically a first watch at this point. I remember The Devil's Rejects more for some reason. Let's see if Rob Zombie is as terrible as I remember. :mjcry:

Watched Mimic. Imagine if this happen in real life brehs. I hate roaches with a passion.

Decent film that sounded mad stupid on paper but they tried their best to make it interesting. I appreciated the cast, the dark tone, and actually trying to make sense of how this all happened.

I thought it was silly how they all survived the explosion at the end, but I let it slide. Oh girl out running that train tho, come on lmao.

I’m pretty sure if I tried I could have nitpicked the film to find it’s cons but decided not too. Enjoyable film to watch that I didn’t know has a series with two more films.

I won’t watch those though. It was fun but I didn’t like it like that to continue.

Yeah, Smile is absolutely elite. It's got elements of the Ring and It Follows for sure, and handles them well enough to feel different. The cinematography brought me back to the first Candyman a few times along with a bit of Oculus. The sound and how they utilized it to prime the theater for scares reminded me of Sinister. And that priming hit my audience most similar to Paranormal Activity. It had so much that reminded me of really good horror.

This year is crazy. Barbarian and Smile are battling for the crown for me so far. That knocks X out of the running when I was sure it'd be my favorite. That's before I get to Incantation. Plus I haven't seen Pearl yet. Shudder has had some really fun originals drop too. Hellraiser, The Menu, Satanic Hispanics, and Halloween Ends are coming out soon. How many years are competing with this one for horror?
