Jumping in on the 31 day Halloween marathon two days late. I'm gonna start tonight with Antebellum.
Review:
This was terrible! What a waste. The premise was interesting, but they didn't do anything with it, and then it just became absurd. It was like Black slave torture porn or something. Ugh. I think I'm gonna just do straight horror tomorrow. Probably the first Halloween movie.
I came away with damn near the exact same thoughts fam, premise started off promising but it seemed like they were obsessed with the "twist" at the expense of everthing else narratively.
Antebellum: In that same "on the nose" kinda messaging way, Antebellum felt like it tried to be more clever than it had to be. The opening scene that juxtaposes the realities of how slaves were treated with a horror score is effective but it starts to get to be much and the plot twist really didn't make up for what started to feel like slavery torture porn to me.
My list:
I already threw the order off a little though. Doubled up and watched No One Gets Out Alive last night. 31 days of horror: 1 Friday - Halloween (2018)
2 Saturday - Candyman (1994)
3 Sunday - No One Gets Out Alive
4 Monday - The Night (2020)
5 Tuesday - Friday the 13th (2009)
6 Wednesday - Suspiria (1977)
7 Thursday - Cabin in the Woods
I've knocked off three days so far, plus I watched Trick R Treat early because I like that movie more with each watch and couldn't wait. But I'm really quoting this because tonight I'm rocking with The Night which was one of my favorite horrors to drop last year and also one that felt pretty overlooked. EDIT: streaming on Hulu.
I had no clue that there was a Salem's Lot feature film being made.

Aight so instead of doing the traditional horror list I decided to do themes for every day (Skipped Sunday cause The Ravens was playing)
Day 1: Horror short films
I had a lot going on that day so I mostly just watched a bunch of shyt YouTube. There's some you tubers out here doing some interesting stuff. Is it crazy scary? Nah. But some of it is original and creepy and a quick watch so I can get in a lot of content while also multitasking.
Day 2: Animals
I started with the GOAT animal horror film Cujo.
I love this movie cause they build up the tension so well throughout the whole thing and the secondary story about the marriage and the affair actually help setup what's to come fairly nicely. It's also kinda sad seeing the dog go crazy and become this psychotic killing machine all cause of a damn bat.
Next I watched Crawl. I had seen it a couple years back but it still got a few jumps out of me.
CGI was solid and those damn gators were moving man. Doesn't build the tension like Cujo or Jaws but still does a good job of making you uneasy throughout the film.
Third was Rogue. This was another movie about alligators but this time a big ass one in the middle of a canyon and some dumb ass tourists. It was decent. Not enough gator for me but the cast did a decent enough job of making me feel like they were all gonna get ate the fukk up.
And last was The Birds. I had never seen this movie strangely enough. I'm not big on movies before the 70's but tbh I loved every bit of it. The effects were trash as hell but the story was really well done, the characters were excellent, the acting was top notch and I was really engaged throughout the whole thing. Those birds were fukking a$$holes lol. The one thing I hated was that there wasn't really a resolution. I thought I knew why the birds were doing it but they never actually revealed it. Bummer.
Day 3: Rest
Day 4: Haunted Houses
First movie I watched was The Haunting (1999). I've seen bits and pieces throughout the years but I had never sat and watched the whole thing till today. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. The cast kind of carries it. A few jumps but mostly it's just creepy and kinda stupid in certain parts. Lily Taylor's character was a goddamn mess too. Like the first 50 minutes of the movie was pretty good and then shyt just went left and goofy. Wouldn't watch again most likely.
Second movie, Stir of Echoes. I had been dancing around this movie for years now but I finally took the plunge and goddamn this was a good ass haunted house movie. Kevin Bacon was fantastic and so was the rest of the cast. I'm mad I waited so long to check it out. It was hella creepy, the story was great and sad as hell, the ending was dope and I kinda wish they had made a proper sequel. Definitely gonna add it to my scary movie rotation for years to come.
Next up is House on Haunted Hill and then Burnt offerings.
This was a decent watch. Had as much fun with it as I did with Hell House LLC. I wish I liked it more because there were a lot of moments where it felt like it was teetering on very good, especially the build-up and atmosphere in the first half, but there were a lot of bad moments too. Really fun traps and I found the villains a lot more intimidating before they took off their masks. Will be sure to revisit every October.
Hopefully I’ll be in better spirits by then and out of this sad space in my head -idk. I think that I still want to do the Halloween thread, rather be busy and doing with a positive distraction than stuck in my head thinking reliving the same moment, Idk- I’ll see how I feel by Friday. Later y’all.
Y’all know I’m down bad when this movie below is what I’m watching bc I’m too sad to pick up the remote and change to another movie.
Truth be told, it’s actually not that bad at all. Idk if I’m saying that bc I’m just inflating the movie bc of my sense of mourning period or if the consensus is that it’s a decent movie? Interesting enough to keep on as I go to sleep for the night anyway.
