DEMETRIUS ANDRADE EAGER TO FACE CANELO TO "BUST HIS ASS"; SOUNDS OFF AND PUTS 154-POUND DIVISION ON NOTICE
By Percy Crawford | June 17, 2016

demetriusandrade2.jpg

PC: Congrats on the win. You came back on the scene with a splash. Obviously you're pleased with your performance. How do you feel?

DA: I feel good, man. You know, after doing 12 hard rounds, the body is sore. I need to rest up and after a week or two, sit down, look at the drawing board, and see who we can defeat next.

PC: I remember when this fight was made, I was thinking Willie Nelson isn't an easy go for anybody. You appeared to not have missed a step. It had to be a great feeling to put on that type of performance against that caliber of opponent.

DA: It felt good. I was telling people during my time off I didn't slack one punch. I was staying in the gym and stayed focused and dedicated my time to my craft, my career, my livelihood; it's feeding my family right now. Knowing that I was undefeated, I was and I still am the former champion, but the other champions are going to be knocking at my door. The opportunities are going to come back around again. God has a plan for everybody and it's turning in my favor now. I was just excited to get back in the ring and I was ready to rumble, young man, rumble!

PC: Would you call the ordeal you went through more frustrating or a test of your character and patience?

DA: The only frustrating part was me watching other people fight and me not actually fighting. I enjoyed taking time off to work on the development of Demetrius Andrade and what I see that needs to be done to make me fan-friendly and increase my power and knowledge of the game as well. That time definitely did me justice and we all seen that in the ring.

PC: You also showed that your power carries late into the fight. Was it a mental thing for you to press and get the knockout or did it just happen for you?

DA: I was definitely looking for the knockout when it comes. When the punch is there and everything is in place, I was going to load up. I wasn't looking for the one-punch knockout. I'm going to put the combinations together and I'm going to figure out which punch is going to be that bang-boom, you know. I have just been working and working on my strength because I have the boxing skills and talent. Me sitting in the gym hitting the bag and doing the boxing part, that's not going to go anywhere. But what I needed to do is get bigger and get stronger and work on the strength and endurance part. If I can't stop a guy in the early rounds or if it's an all-out war, then I'm going to have that in the later rounds like I did. I'm learning how to conserve energy and be patient while being consistent with my attack at the same time. So I was looking over all of my fights and I was like, "Damn, I could have pressed the action. I could have done this and that." So the time I took off, I definitely got in the gym and worked on some things in sparring and putting the pressure on and just trying to get in the habit of always having something out there in each and every round so the people will be like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, did you see that," and put them butts in them seats.

PC: You closed that distance and for once, you weren't the taller guy in the fight, but you showed great patience after hurting him in letting it all come together. That's the mark of a great champion.

DA: Nah, if you go into my fights and watch any of my earlier fights, I ain't never just go in there and try to just go all out because how I grew up watching the sport of boxing and watching other fights. I seen how people get somebody hurt and sometimes, they not hurt as bad as you think. I've been fighting 20-something years now and I've been hurt once or twice in my life and sometimes just because you hit me with a good punch, you might wobble me or have me dazed for a quick second, but that doesn't mean I can't protect myself or come back with some power shots, like the Ortiz and Berto fight. Berto go ahead and drops him and then goes in and tries to rush him, so boom, he goes down. I'm learning from them mistakes and I'm not going to put myself in them positions at all. It looks ugly and it looks sloppy when you just go in there and do that shyt. So I was like, I'm going to take my time and I'm going to perfect the masterpiece of this knockout where it's clear and clean and not just me throwing a whole bunch of punches to get you out of there.

PC: The 154-pound division is a really hot division right now, if not the hottest division, and it's great to see you back in the mix. You've said all of the names; any name in particular that you want to test your skills against more than anyone else?

DA: Canelo! Overall, Canelo because he is the most popular, he's fought Mayweather, and he's been at that elite level. I want to be able to fight somebody that's fought that elite level and he's still giving people action. Even though he's not fighting the best, he's fighting blown up 40's and 47's and that's some bullshyt, but I would definitely like to get in there and bust his ass. I've been calling him out before, but you know you call him out and his fans are like, "Why should he fight him? Who did he fight? Why? Canelo don't need to fight him." But let him say, "I want to fight Amir Khan," and his fans are like, "Yeah! Yeah!" If he wanted to fight Liam Smith, who has my old belt, "Yeah! Yeah!" He wanted to fight James Kirkland, "Yeah! Yeah!" Come on, man!

PC: Unfortunately, there is an unwritten thing in boxing where you can look too good. I don't see many guys looking your way.

DA: That's what I was worried about too. I gotta go out there and perform and do the best that I can, but it's like, damn, I shouldn't have looked that good because I'm not going to be able to get these fights. But at end of the day, they are going to have to make these guys fight. As long as the media and the fans keep on screaming Demetrius Andrade's name, they are going to have to make them fight.

PC: I hope to see you in some of these fights that you want. Great to have you back in the mix and I wish you the best. Anything you want to add my man?

DA: I just want to thank you for being a supporter of boxing. Everybody out there, just keep following Demetrius Andrade. You go to google and you can find all of my social media pages and just stay tuned for greatness, man. God bless everybody.

Khan is done. Nelo knocked the prime outta him

I feel you, but I also feel like nikkas such as Swift, Diaz, Peterson, etc...all been chipping away at Khan's prime for a while now.

It's just that Canelo came and knocked off a big ass chunk like it was some type of Marvel vs Capcom super move.

I dunno, I think Khan still has what it takes to be competitive at 147 :yeshrug:

Oh no doubt, he still has the talent to be competitive, but I doubt he'd be favored to beat most of the top dogs. (Swift, Thurman, Porter, Brook, Spence)

Being past your prime doesn't mean you fall completely off. It's just that you're not expected to be at your peak anymore and that you'll prolly show some decline in certain aspects of your overall style/game

Some boxers recover better than others so it's hard to say.

I thought Floyd beat the prime outta Corrales, but dude bounced back and was still elite.

Kirkland definitely beat the prime outta Glen Tapia though. He got a few lil wins afterwards, but he never really got back close to peak form again and that punch resistance was gone which resulted in more losses.

just by watching your gifs and practicing your theories mixed with a good coach I have, I did well in sparring today. No video was allowed. People were looking at me like I was a beast in there lol. I did well by confusing my opponent with the head movement, feint and trap setting. Is there any way you can give me some drills and vids or pointers as far as excellent footwork breh ?

Thx @Yuzo

there are two ways to move forward or backward.

1. step and drag

TxDoaExC.gif

to step and drag take a step forward with your front foot then press down on your front foot and drag your back foot forward in the same motion.

or

2. push and slide

I8f4MHQf.gif

to push and slide just push off of your back foot and slide your front foot forward in the same motion.

i recommend just walking in and starting your step and drag or your push and slide only when you think you have come into what you consider a good range to throw one of your jabs to the space in front of the head. thats generally a good range.

heres george foreman walking forward into a push and slide.

lHv0Aeji.gif

and you can also step and drag backwards.

chcedSVe.gif

and you can also push and slide backwards.

there are two ways to move side to side around the ring.

1. circling

oHbohSw0.gif

to circle point your front hip toward your opponent. your body will be turned sideways. your heels will be pointing over to your left side and your toes will be pointing over to your right side.

to circle to your left move one heel in front of the other heel walking backwards into your left side. remember to keep your front hip pointed.

ashkbXm2.gif

to circle to your right move one foot in front of the other foot walking forward into your right side. remember to keep your front hip pointed.

s1itmPv5.gif

or

2. skipping

am5WSYFP.gif

guys that box out of a squared up stance will tend to skip instead of circle to move around in the ring since your body will need to be turned sideways and your feet will need to be pointing into your left and your right side in order to circle into your left or your right side. which is why you need to get sideways to circle. see how that works? but one benefit of skipping is that you can actually skip in any direction.

ZaObeABn.gif

try mixing up your movement.

wZm5wJ6w.gif

to cut off the ring you will need to be able to move laterally so the same rules apply.

you can cut off the ring with your skip.

gCvLWhkJ.gif

or you can cut off the ring the same way you would when you circle.

ARqdmbC0.gif

this post is getting a little long with a lot of gifs already so ill pm you some footwork drills if you would like some. this just covered basic footwork so if you have any specific questions ill try and answer those for you too.

Warm up that baby oil breh :blessed:

I just practiced circling for 3 rounds in my basement :ehh: not difficult at all. I prefer step and drag pause then jab, but who knows what would work better in sparring (not me).

Yeah it confuses nikkas on the length :shaq: of your jab. You see in gif @Yuzo uses as an example of push n slide how he throws the lead hand up to defend the jab because he thought it was coming. That's why I like using it because if you work your jab in front of you and mix that inbetween it makes it a nightmare for who you're sparring. :demonic:
