By Dan Ambrose: IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0, 24 KOs) says he’s ready to face WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) whenever he is. Ward had been talking lately in moving up to 175 to face the big names in that weight class like Kovalev.

After Ward’s recent 9th round win over Paul Smith this month, he’s been quiet about whether he wants to move up in weight or hot. Ward’s trainer Virgil Hunter says that he’s going to think it over before he moves up or not because there are still big fights that he can take at 168 without having to move up in weight yet.

If Kovalev is serious about wanting to fight Ward, then he’ll need to get past his next opponent Nadjib Mohammedi (37-3, 23 KOs) on July 25th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem for Kovalev, but you never know. Mohammedi is a big puncher and he could get lucky by landing one of his big shots on the chin of Kovalev.

“I’m ready to fight anyone,” Kovalev said to the revewjournal.com. “I want to fight the best. If Andre Ward wants to fight, then let’s do it. I would welcome that very much.”

Ward was shaken up by a right hand from Paul Smith this month, and he might not want to trade shots with a slugger like Kovalev, who is capable of hitting Ward all night long with better power than the punch that Smith hurt Ward with. If Ward takes that fight, he could find himself tasting the canvas.

Ward can talk about moving up in weight and potentially finding success at 175, but actually doing it is a different thing altogether. Kovalev is a killer puncher and he’d test Ward’s chin again and again and again if he were to get the fight.

The fact that Ward couldn’t stop an average fighter like Smith until the 9th round suggests that Ward would need to be able to go 12 rounds if he wanted to best a guy like Kovalev. The negative thing about going 12 rounds with Kovalev is that he’d have many chances of scoring a knockout over Ward. But even if Kovalev didn’t KO Ward, he’d punish him badly with devastating shots, and that would create a lot of wear and tear on Ward.

At 31, Ward might not want to take that punishment. He has a good gig in working as a commentator with HBO, and he rarely fights at 168, and when he does, he’s not being tested due to the weak opposition in that weight class. If Ward stays at 168, he can possibly get fights against George Groves and James DeGale.

It’s also possible that those fighters will choose to avoid Ward for the remainder of his career. Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler chose not to fight Ward again after he beat them in the Super Six tournament. It’s possible that Ward could wind up wasting his time waiting for more fights that will never happen if he chooses to stay at 168.

Yep.

Monster vs Gonzalez is like a technical boxer puncher's dream fight. Both guys have high skill levels, good physical attributes, ring smarts, power etc..I could go on. I think that fight would produce high quality fireworks. The chance of someone stinking it out is extremely low.

Krusher vs Superman is just two brute force high level punchers going at it. Both got skills, but not as refined or as visually appealing as Monster/Gonzalez. It's still the best match up in boxing to me and the fight has already been built up for 2 years.

Canelo/Cotto is like the 3rd best fight to me, but you run the chance of Canelo gassing or Cotto folding/taking a knee early. Fight should be good, but it has the potential of half assery on either guy's part.

Walters/Loma is a good fight. No argument their. I think Walter's leaky defense might get exposed a bit.

Ward/GGG not even remotely interested in that bout. I feel like both have different career trajectories. 160- 168 is a huge gap and most good middleweights rarely succeed in doing so. History is against Golovkin in that fight, plus that bout needs to marinate for another year or so for it to even become a realistic thought.

Thurman/Bradley - great fight, but not realistic. Besides, One Time lands that shot Vargas landed in the 12th a whole lot sooner and well...you know what happens then.

Crawford/M. Garcia- good fight, but it's not happening and would take too long to build up, plus they both cool and got the same manager.

Pac/Chino- good fight not happening though. Both nowhere close to getting back in the ring now.

Froch/Degale- good fight, but not Krusher/Superman good or Canel/Cotto good. might not even happen either.

ive never heard who u speak on who u think would win that fight. shyt is 50/50 to me.

do u think kov is duckin adonis or its kathy/politics fought for pulling out of the purse bid?

By Scott Gilfoid: The untested and some would say unproven IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) thinks WBA/WBA/WBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) would do well to avoid him for the remainder of his career because Brook believes in his mind that he would be too much for Mayweather if he were to face him now. Brook thinks that he’s too hungry for Mayweather, and it would end badly against the American talent.

Like his fellow countryman Amir Khan, Brook for some reason hasn’t faced quality opposition during his 11-year pro career. Brook has really only faced one good opponent during his career in Shawn Porter, and even in that fight, Brook was forced to hold at the same clip that Adrien Broner did against Porter in order to keep from getting pounded into submission.

To say that Brook should have been docked points over and over again for his holding against Porter is putting it lightly. You can make an argument that Brook should have been disqualified for his holding in that fight because it was excessive and reminded me of the holding that former heavyweight Henry Akinwande did in his fight against Lennox Lewis many years ago.

“If I were him [Mayweather], I’d keep well away from me,” Brook said to Skysports.com. “I am hungry and I want to take that zero and turn it into one. People would really be excited about that fight. There’s me and Keith Thurman that can cause Mayweather problems.”

It sure would help Brook’s career to get the payday fight against Mayweather, but that’s all I see the fight really being – just a payday for Brook. He’s too slow, too mechanical and too upright for him to have a chance of beating a talented fighter like Mayweather. Besides that, Brook is far too inexperienced to ever beat a fighter like Mayweather. We’re talking about a fighter who has faced the following fighters in his last ten fights: Frankie Gavin, Jo Jo Dan, Shawn Porter, Alvaro Robles, Vyacheslav Senchenko, Hector David Saldivia, Carson Jones [twice], Luis Galarza and Matthew Hatton. In Brook’s five fights before that, he beat Rafal Jackiewicz, Lovemore Ndou, Philip Kotey, Michael Jennings and Krzysztof Bienias. Where in the heck is the quality among those fighters once you get past Porter?

The reality is that Brook has been matched very, very, very carefully during his 11-year pro career by consistently putting him in record-padding fights against mediocre opposition, and as such, he’s now finding himself being ignored by Mayweather because he has such a low footprint in the United States. You get what you put into a career.

If you pad your record like former heavyweight contender Brian Nielsen (64-3, 43 KOs), then you get very little in return. If you look at Nielsen’s career, he did very little other than get a fight against Mike Tyson towards the end of his career. Brook seems to be getting matched up the same way that Nielsen did. In Brook’s next fight on September 12th, his promoter Eddie Hearn wants to match him against former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios instead of a talented fighter like Keith Thurman, Marcos Maidana or Shawn Porter. With that kind of match-making, is it any wonder why Brook finds himself getting ignored by Mayweather and Amir Khan?

I usually don't speak on fights that prolly won't happen, but.....

Breh, it's team #SupermanStevenson all day. Mid Rd KO.

It's a 50/50 fight. Kovalev might be a slight favorite or can be looked at as having more career momentum though.

My biggest critique of Stevenson is his lack of a right hook. Dude barely throws it and when he does that shyt is meh. Manny used to be one handed too, but he made up for it with his frantic pace, work rate, excellent footwork, and stamina. Basically a whole bunch of other shyt Superman doesn't do.

Superman just has a jab and a nasty left. No clean up right hook. That's what worries me the most. I'd pick Superman, but I wouldn't put money on it. He's one dimensional, but that one dimension is a bytch to have to deal with. Krusher got more wrinkles to his game as of now, but he's too easy to hit with your money punch. His biggest weakness is Stevenson's biggest natural strength.

I think Duva is holding up the fight now. I respect her and she's good at what she does, but that letter she sent was counter productive.

yeah thats my biggest worries for stevenson too.

kkkov vs pascal showed me kkkov is open to get hit to the body ALOT. has stamina issues and can be put down/caught too by counter punches.(which is how adonis koed chad)

he would get kinda predictable to with the 1-2 trying to catch pascal with that big right. his inside fighting is meh as well and he doesnt like fighting going backwards.

he also doesnt go to the body enough imo.

his work rate and footwork is better than adonis....but thats about it imo.

Yeah Stevenson is a pretty good body puncher. There footwork is about the same. Kovalev has better offensive footwork. Stevenson has better defensive footwork and boxes better on
the back foot than Krusher does.

Krusher has the better chin definitely. I think the stamina's are equal. We haven't seen Kovalev go 12 rounds throwing straight bombs like Stevenson did with Fonfara. Most boxers will get tired from that shyt so I just find it funny how cats always reference that fight for Superman when they talk about his stamina. Bad example. We've seen Krusher get winded against guys like Agnew that barely fought back. Big difference.

Damn, the more we talk about this shyt, the more it pisses me off that we won't get this fight anytime soon. Best fight boxing can make and that shyt is turning into MayPac all over again.

Sooooo true.
Fight needs to happen sooner than later. You got some real spoilers (Chilemba) and some real killers (Beterbiev) hovering around that weight. No need in having either get upset by those types of fighters and throw the whole hype of the mega fight off.
